More from Beary Poppins and Welcome to 31 Days of Pandas!

Here we are! It is December 1st! We have survived (so far) but there are still weeks to go before January 20th, and even then, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Mittens. But we strive to embrace good cheer this month, because 31 Days of Pandas is now in da house!

Today we have another episode of Beary Poppins. complete with another tug at the old heart strings. Tomorrow…well, we’ll just have to see about tomorrow! In addition to the daily ‘toons (some new, some old) I thought that maybe we would try a little experiment! I’m calling it The Daily Panda Deal. I have various odds and ends remaining from various thingies I’ve made, and while I adore having boxes of things in my studio, (ha ha, just kidding) it would be better if I could send them to YOU at a special Black and White Friday deal.

Quantities are limited (some things more than others) so in order to give everyone a fair chance, requests MUST be placed via the Buy Stuff With Pandas comment form at the bottom of that page. That way, I have a record of who ordered what when, and can send an invoice via Square. The Daily Panda Deal will follow the day’s ‘toon offering. The Post Office is telling us that if I mail things before December 18th, they should get to you by Christmas, but who knows. Recent packages have taken more than a week to reach their destinations.

But now! On to our feature ‘toon of the day, another episode of Beary Poppins!

Bikkie loves Beary Poppins! Also Rory the Dinosaur by Liz Climo

The Daily Panda Deal for December 1

Today’s Panda Deal is a set of Panda Chronicles Washi tape! You can decorate all kinds of this with this tape. You could even take plain ornaments and wrap a band of tape around them and you would have fun panda ornaments! Normally $20 + shipping for a set of 4 tapes, today’s deal is $15 + $4 shipping in the US. Remember to use the contact form on the Buy Stuff with Pandas Page to order.

This deal is  for December 1st only!

Tape is slightly over 1 inch wide and 10 yards long!

Here is a picture of the actual tape!

Coming this week! 31 Days of Pandas!

2020 seems like it was million years long, didn’t it? As we get ready to enjoy the wonder that is 31 Days of Pandas I thought it would be good to look back at a ‘toon or two from each month this year, so that we can see the many splendored (????) year that 2020 has been.

You might have noticed I have not done any post election ‘toons. Call it superstition, but until I watch Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take the oath of office, I am somewhat apprehensive that Mittens will manage to yank the rug out from under us yet again. Suffice to say, Pinky is taking the results fairly well (for Pinky) but I’m not expecting that to hold necessarily. As she said to me, “it’s been kind of hard to be my normal, outrageous self, when mittens is so outrageous on his own in real life. dis is beary unfairs to pinky. ”

Wise words from a small panda.

In addition to the twice weekly new ‘toons, 31 Days of Pandas will feature Holiday Encore Presentations from the Panda Chronicle Archives. And…maybe a commercial or two from the Buy Stuff With Pandas pages. On Tuesday I will reveal the latest addition to the Felty Panda Pantheon (which according to my laptop dictionary can mean: a group of particularly respected, famous, or important people: the pantheon of the all-time greats.) I assume that goes for pandas too!

A reminder that PDXWildlife Auction ends today (November 29th) and that felty pandas bought during the months of November and December will trigger a small donation to PDXWildlife!

Now! On to 2020, the Year That Was…

January brings us one of the more reprehensible creatures that abide in the land of pandas…

This makes perfect sense to me!

In February, the Impeachment saga went on, while unbeknownst to (almost) everyone (everyone but Mittens and some Senators who coincidentally traded stocks that were about to tank) a global pandemic was brewing.

What did Mr. Bun Know and when did he know it?

March: Later in the year, we lost our beloved icon, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. But earlier in the year, she was still kicking butt and taking names, despite her battle with cancer. She lives on in our hearts.

Meet Ruth Panda Ginsbear

April: The pandemic took hold for real, and while Mittens and his evil spawn tried to figure out how they could ignore it while making a buck off of it, governors (mostly in states led by Democrats) enacted quarantines and mask requirements to try to buy some time for hospitals that were being overwhelmed by COVID19 patients.

You can’t get more socially distant than sending everyone to their room!

Well, bless her heart!

May: Speaking of trying to make a buck off of the pandemic…

Wait…we get paid?

June: The pandemic raged on. Closed and deserted National Parks made room for the native wildlife. The Democratic field had narrowed to Joe Biden, and Mittens was aiming his propaganda machine at Biden, while continuing to mismanage the pandemic. Thank goodness Frank and Mikey were on the job to report on happenings at Yosemite National Park!

Be a wild thing!

Wild thing, I think I love you!

July: The Democratic Party stages a virtual Convention that a was surprisingly moving, and despite a few technical glitches, was both watchable and inspiring. Shortly before the convention, Biden chose Kamala Harris as his running mate. HUZZAH!!! Mittens produced a cringeworthy convention, at least partially on the grounds of the WH, which as it is a government property, I’m pretty sure was illegal. One of his lesser crimes, I guess. I’ve lost count.

Well, it IS rather easy to understand…

Personally, I think the voice of Pinky is much more soothing than that of You Know Who!

August: We learned of the death of one of the guiding lights of the Twitter Panda Community. She loved pandas and NASCAR and was a force for connection within the panda community. It was not coronavirus, but who knows if her heart condition would have gotten more scrutiny if not for the overwhelming strain that coronavirus placed on hospitals.

Meanwhile, despite a slight dip in cases in May and June, the unwillingness of some states to institute mask requirements and event restrictions, the pandemic comes roaring back. Just when toilet paper supplies began to normalize.

But late in august (the 21st, to be exact) we had some GREAT news!

Who will win? Six and Sebben battle it out on the track!

Mommee Mei has an eagle eye!

A new cubby! The possibilities are endless!

September: Ping learns he can stay forever, and Frank and Mikey become Felties!

Mommee Mei always knows the right thing to do and say!

Is that a donut I see before me?

October: Frank applies for a new job!

Frank is off on a new adventure!

And now here we are! November! Mittens Removal Day!

Mittens Removal Day!

Be the very brave Bear!

Get ready for 31 Days of Pandas!!!!

Bikkie has a Name!!!

Yes, we are in the middle of Beary Poppins and I *MIGHT* have left him tied to a chair, thanks to a little bit of…um…high spirits from Six and Sebben, bless their hearts!

But!!!

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and while who on your list wouldn’t want felty pandas, I have a couple of suggestions of some wonderful things being made by some of my artist/artisan friends here on Whidbey Island.

These are things I have acquired for myself, so I can definitely attest to their general awesomeness.

The first are the products made by Silly Dog Studio in Langley. We all are thinking more about creating less waste in the products that we use, and there are a number of shampoo bars on the market now. Silly Dog also makes a hand lotion bar, as well as some other products, and are about to release a dish soap bar, which I am very eager to try. I’ve been using their shampoo bar for about 3 weeks, and they are lovely. They are scented with things like mint and rosemary, and mint and lavender, which they grow on their small, just out of downtown Langley lot. They dry the plants and then extract the essential oils, and then make the soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. Sounds like a lot of work to this panda, and I’d much rather have them do it. You can find their products here.

And who doesn’t love their logo, for all you silly dog fans!

Silly name, wonderful products! Tell them the panda sent you!

I moved to Whidbey Island in 1989, following in the footsteps of one of my good friends from graduate school, sculptor Georgia Gerber. She and her husband Randy had a daughter, Laura, who eventually grew up and went to art school and became a painter and a printmaker.  After grad school, and meeting and marrying her sweetheart, Laura and Victor moved back to the island, had a couple kids of their own and moved down the road from mom and dad. In addition to her paintings, Laura also does some pretty cool prints on t-shirts, kitchen towels, table linens, kids clothes, etc.

She doesn’t have a website at the moment (it’s under construction) what with keeping up with her kids, her painting and production printing, and her husband Victor, but you can find her work on Instagram, and probably arrange to buy it there and maybe bug her a little bit about getting her website up and running. Ha ha. Don’t do that. At least don’;t tell her I told you to bug her.

An assortment of kitchen towels. She has all sorts of animals on her products. I happen to be fond of the chickens.

But enough with the shopping! What about today’s news about Biscuit’s official name and today’s ‘toon????

Wait no longer! Biscuit’s official Chinese name is Xiao Qi Ji, which means little miracle!

Bikkie has a name!!!!

Day 31 ~ 31 Days of Pandas

Oh my goodness! It’s Day 31!!!! It’s New year’s Eve in my time zone. for some of you, it’s already next year! What ever time zone you are in, take a deep breath, sleep in, if you can, and think about how you are going to combat authoritarianism this year!

I’m going to do it by speaking out here, and in the real world, and keep drawing my ‘toons that speak my truth!

Keep being the bear!

WE need to do better in 2020! What can possibly go wrong?

Day 30 ~ 31 Days of Pandas!

It’s Day 30 of 31 Days of Pandas! Thank you for joining me for this month-long Pandapalooza! It is always fun dipping into the archives to see what floats to the surface!

We are looking at a very stressful year ahead. HWMNBN is not going to go quietly into the night like Nixon did. He is going to go kicking and screaming and saying UNFAIR WITCH HUNT all the way. We need to be very brave and stand up for the Constitution and for Democracy. We need all the pandas and frosting that we can get!

To that end, let me leave you with some of my all time favorite ‘toons from over the years!

2011

Ever wondered where all these pandas came from?

2012

The panda kindergaten knows where you live.

2013

An explorer’s work is never done.

2014

Pinky answers difficult questions from the press in her own way.

2015

Thanks a lot, Leslie. I think you gave Pinky this idea.

2016

Oh those red pandas! They are such characters!

2017

international woman's day

…and due to the International women’s day strike of 2017

2018

Well *bleep* and take your *bleep* and stick it *bleep*!!!!

2019- We introduced Frank and Mikey late in 2018 (when they allegedly ate Supreme Court nominee Bart Kravenclaw) and I think these (non-panda) bears are here to stay!

Ruh Roh….

I hope you enjoyed this look back at panda satire through the years since we started this blog! Tune in tomorrow for the 31st day of 31 Days of Pandas, and all next month as we do our Year in Review on Sundays!

Day 29 ~ 31 Days of Pandas

We are so close to the end of 31 Days of Pandas that I can almost taste the cuppycakes that I get to have once I get done setting up all of these posts! I’m hard at work, thinking about what the pandas are going to get up to next year! These little bears keep me on my tippy toes!

Which reminds me…

are you SURE it’s not “carbonated”?

I’m sure Greta Thunberg would applaud Bob’s efforts to reduce his carbonated foot print.

well, what if I….

but…WeREndangered!

Pandas LOVE science! They are also very good at literature!

What do you mean by “was?”

Bob’s first foray into the realms of literature …

is it….

…time for….

…a little something?

By the way, I am hard at work inventing the reward levels for the felty panda project, which I am calling Hold Me Closer Tiny Panda! I’m very excited, as I have always felt that the only way you get good at something is to do it a lot! To that end, even though the project hasn’t started yet (look for it to start around the 9th of January, for Kickstarter’s #Make100 initiative) I am already making pandas! I keep designating ones I want to keep, as well as refining my panda felting techniques. Stay tuned! as soon as I have a bit more done on the project page, I’ll share it with you here so you can follow along and be ready for the launch!

Day 28 ~ 31 Days of Pandas

Oh my. We are almost at the end of the 2019 edition of 31 Days of Pandas. Recently, one of my readers asked how 31 Days of Pandas got started. Maybe what they actually asked was “What the heck were you THINKING!!!!????”

As I recall, the first year I did this, it was in November, and an illustrator friend had just completed A Monster a Day during the month of October. Another popular one-a-day art project for artists is Inktober, where people post a drawing a day during the month of October. While I have not participated, I’ve seen some great drawings posted for Inktober, and I think for those looking for a kick in the pants to do some regular drawing, I think it is a fine thing. Since making art is my day job, there is less of an incentive, and it feels like another thing on my lengthy “to do” list. Don’t let my attitude stop you from trying this!

My original 30 Days of Pandas was to create a drawing that every day, in honor of Po’s Birthday! I added a new panda to the drawing every day for a month. This turned out to be more work than I thought, as I had to re-scan the drawing every time I added a panda. It did turn out to be a really fun drawing, though!

Days one and two!

Day nine!

I think I need to have the ballon panda as something on Redbubble!

Day 27 ~ 31 Days of Pandas

Yesterday’s ‘toon made me think about all the other occasions that Mei Xiang delivered some resolutions for Pinky, so I thought that today’s ‘toon round up could feature those ‘toons! (Pinky: I don’t know why! I’m already perfect!)

Is Pinky perfect? You be the judge!

Once again proving the intransigence of Pinky, and the omnipotence of Mommy Mei

resolutions

Pinky: “rules are for other pandas.”

Bubba: my resolution was just to chew my food more, an’ mebbee not eat so much frosting.

This one is not “resolution” based, but is one of my all time favorites!

See? I told you it was broken!
