Happy Birthday To You!

Well, this may be a first for The Panda Chronicles.

You know how people who are born on holidays like Christmas or 4th of July always complain that no one ever really celebrates their birthday because..um…MAJOR HOLIDAY!!!!!DUH!!!!

So, think about what it means to be born on what is probably the most infamous day in recent American history (and I don’t mean the day that the Supremes appointed George W. President) Yeah, I am talking about the ultimate conversation stopper. What if your birthday is on September 11th? Let me put that another way, in case you missed the reference.

What if your birthday was on 9/11?

Well, that just happens to be the case for one of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire’s most faithful followers, a young woman from my home town of Phillie PA. so in honor of your birthday, we bring you….

A Salute to Cake! Happy Birthday, Cami Taylor!!!!!

Well, apparently, much to my surprise, I could go on and on with cartoons of pandas and cakes, but I won’t!

Happy birthday, once again Cami….be sure to…um…have some cake. How did I know about this? Let’s just say that small pandas have big mouths. I’m looking at YOU, Emperor Pew! ( see article: When good pandas go bad!) Thanks for alerting me to the news that there is something to celebrate about 9/11. That Bamboo Psychic network is really something!

FFF Asks: Who’s Your Daddy?

In all the excitement of the birth of twin panda cubs at the National Zoo, and then the sad news of the smaller of the cubs death, a little news item got…um…overlooked and everyone wants to know: Who’s your daddy?

For today’s Fabulously Furry Friday line up of encores, we revisit some ‘toons that ask that very question.

"It was dark....there were men in masks...."

“It was dark….there were men in masks….”

Who's the bear???!!!

Who’s the bear???!!!

And who can forget the “transformation” of Po and the Meihem twins of Cublanta?

Pinky is VERY powerful. Be afraid, be very afraid, Mr Wu.

And finally, we apologize (Ha! No we don’t) for anthropomorphizing pandas, and…um…making fun of them.

Our lack of taste is only exceeded by our sense of the absurd.

Hope this Friday is treating you well! and remember, you can have ALL these cartoons to read again (and again) with the Panda Chronicle series, books 1 thru 5 and coming soon! Book 6!!!!

FFF presents: Pandas of Days Past

I thought I would continue my theme of sharing a specific month’s cartoons from several years ago. It is always fun and instructive (for me, anyway) to see how my drawings have changed from my early days of pandism.  Today, let’s revisit March of 2011…

Let’s start with The panda kindergarten’s first trip to the olympics, starring Bob as a young panda!

And since I have had to do a little air travel recently, I was reminded of this cartoon, which incidentally is a favorite of one of my younger fans, (yes, that’s you, Celeste), much to her mother’s dismay.

Commercial alert! If you are enjoying these cartoons from the early days of panda satire, you can find them all in Book 1 of The Panda Chronicles: Your Brain on Pandas! Find it on Amazon, or out of the back of my car!

See you next time!

What could be more Fabulous and Furry, but Friday?

It’s Fabulous Furry Friday, once again, coming to you LIVE from The Institute of Contemporary Panda Satire! Yay! Now that John Stewart has retired, does that leave an opening for the Institute of Contemporary Panda Satire to take center stage in the public consciousness?

Nah, we didn’t think so either, but a bear can dream!

Now, allow me to root around in the archives to see what we were up to in…July of 2011!

Fabulous Furry Friday!

It’s Friday! and it is Fabulous and Furry!

I had mixed feelings about making any kind of commentary about the death murder of Cecil the lion. I have friends and acquaintances who hunt for food, but killing a living creature just to put his head on the wall seems so very wrong in so many ways. I couldn’t find anything to make a lighthearted cartoon about, because, as John Stewart  accurately said after the murder of 9 people in a South Carolina church  recently. “There’s just nothing funny about this.” But the pandas all gathered around me, and reminded me of this important concept, and so I did a drawing in tribute to the endangered among us, on two feet as well as four.

We R All Endangered.

073 we r all endangered 100r copy

And now, on with our regularly scheduled pandas….News from the panda front in San Diego is a little sad, but not totally unexpected. Bai Yun is 24 years old and they decided to give her one more chance to have another cub, as hormonally she was…um…ready. The SDZ folks announced today that Bai Yun is not Pregnant.

I’m sure in some ways, both she and Mr Wu are relieved. The Wu self gets to remain her baby boy forever, and given his attitude about cute cub proliferation, he is probably especially relieved.

Please refer any questions to Mr Wu's legal team.

Uh oh. All is not well in Pandyland!

Hope you are having a wonderful summer, and not burning in a raging brush or forest fire. Or experiencing earthquakes or tsunamis. Or anything bad. Just saying.

Bob T Panda

PS: notice how I didn’t say anything about the #GOPdebate last night.

*F.F.F. Salutes The Wee Wu Self!*

*Fabulous Furry Friday salutes the Wee Wu Self! (*Thank you and a cuppycake to Stevi G. for coining that descriptive phrase about the wu self! It’s perfect.)

Since recently we saluted the Meihems on the occasion on their second birthday, This week we will salute Mr. Wu, who is no longer two, or at least Mr. Wu, no longer “wee” is now turning three. Really, the poetry police should be here any minute. Should I give you full credit for this rhyme, Stevi?

I will try to find some Wu-toons that have not been rebroadcast lately, but you know I love the Wu self so much, I show his cartoons whenever I can.

Here are a selection from each of Wu’s adventures, which (beware, advertisement coming) can be found in his very own book, The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu. You know you want it!

Mr Wu’s first adventure with the rascally panda kindergarten, saw him sail the high seas in his little donut floaty. Which is pretty funny, because Mr Wu would avoid baths at all costs.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of boo beer!

And then there was the time Mr. Wu built an airplane (with the help of the panda kindergarten…

But once safely on the ground (not to mention grounded for life) Mr Wu’s resolve to not get mixed up with the pandy kindy did not last long…

This one was a real tear-jerker….

So, now you know, if you don’t have Mr. Wu’s book already, you need it, right? There will be more from Pinky’s presidential campaign next week, but today, let’s celebrate Mr.wu’s Birthday, just a couple of days ago on July 29th!

*F.F.F. Salute to Meihem!

* Fabulous Furry Friday is proud to present our…

Salute to Meihem!!!!!!

Yes, the darling duo turns TWO this weeK, and all things Pinky aside, we are delighted to celebrate the Meihem’s big week! (For those of you who are new to panda watching, the Meihems are the twin cubs of Lun Lun and Yang Yang of the Cublanta Zoo …um I meant Zoo Atlanta…deep in the southern belle state of Georgia.

I remember the day they were born. I was watching the Zoo Atlanta panda cam and Lun Lun was in the den, and wouldn’t you know it a little cub just slid out. of…you know…the cub slidey place, and then not even a half hour later, here comes ANOTHER one! I immediately called one of the panda faithful, knowing she would be watching as well, and we yelled into our phones and jumped around our respective kitchens.

What a day!

The first appearance of the twinkies on The Panda Chronicles

The first appearance of the twinkies on The Panda Chronicles

We started off calling them The Twinkies, but when they got their real names at 100 days, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, we began to call them the Meihems, because when you have more than one panda cub, you are bound to have Meihem!

But of course, Mr Wu had had a whole year of being the center of attention, and he. was. not. pleased at this development.

Mr Wu speaks out!

And then there was the old gender misidentification thing. For the first four months, we thought they were boys…

Fabulous Furry Friday Salutes Selfies

How time flies! This week the Tour de France has begun. Personally I think those bike riders are all nuts: three weeks of grueling cycling in hot weather, up mountains and down treacherous roads. And if that’s not bad enough, then there are those stupid people stepping out to take  selfies:

Hey! Get out of the way!

Hey! Get out of the way!

And yes, there is the occasional idiot who thinks selfies with a tiger would be a really cool thing to post on Fezbook.

Much better to take a selfie with pandas!

Much better to take a selfie with pandas!

New York state has put a stop to this! But did they think about all the implications of this ban?

You know we're just kidding about this, right?

You know we’re just kidding about this, right?

And as you recall, Pinky got in….um… a little trouble over this fundraising scheme: (Good thing she is not a New York State resident!)

I really had no idea what she was up to.

I really had no idea what she was up to.

And I thought this story was a load of bull:

AAAAAAhhhHHHHHH!

AAAAAAhhhHHHHHH!

So have a fabulous furry friday, and try to stay cool out there. Unless you are in Australia, and then you should stay warm.
Be the Bear,
Bob T Panda

BTW: a recent report on NPR revealed that you can now take photographs in the white House. Hmmm, do we think a small panda might try to take a selfie in the oval office, just to, you know, see what she will look like in there?

Fabulous Furry Friday presents Mei Watch

A new report from panda nanny extraordinaire Nicole McCorkle reveals that while Mei Xiang may be doing a little decorating around her den, we shouldn’t start knitting booties for the new arrivals just yet. Pandas are notoriously coy when it comes to revealing if they are actually pregnant or not.

Therefore, it is time for our favorite show…Mei Watch!

BTW, I’ve been having a little internet frolic (get your minds out of the gutters, people!) over on the blog Cordelia’s Mom, Still, and we have been doing a group post between Cordelia’s Mom and a few other bloggers. I even did a special cartoon for it, but the only place you can see it is here!

Fabulous Furry Friday

Last week we revisited some of the earliest appearances of Princess Pinky and the Meihems. Pinky thought we should continue in this vein. Don’t ask me how she gets away with this high handed behavior. She just does. (I am putty in her paws.) So join us as Fabulous Furry Friday presents….

Pinky tests her powers....

Pinky tests her powers….

And then, there was the first appearance of Pinky’s magical wand (for those of you who came in after the start of our show)…

National Zoo cub makes mom Mei Xiang disappear

oops.

Princess Pinky is fooled by Mei Xiang at the National Zoo

Oh Princess Pinky, mom has a trick or two up her paw, I think…

And even though I may incur the wrath of those who have a different political viewpoint, I just have to share that traumatic day when…I shudder to remember…the Pinky-cam was shut down! Remember, cartoons have a long history of being political and maybe through humor, we might resolve our differences.

Nah, I didn’t think so either. Just deal with it.

How much can a small panda stand?

How much can a small panda stand? Pinky has a way of putting things in perspective.

Next Friday, I think the Meihems should have the day to themselves. what do you think, Pinky?
