Some results from our photo contest!

Welcome to Fun…With…Pandas!  The show where YOUR photos can win you valuable prizes!  In our original concept of the idea, we thought that the costumes themselves would be the focus of the project.  We quickly realized that the settings in which people photographed Babette and the stories that they made up about her “visit” to the photographer’s locale was the REAL story.

I’m going to share a few of the photos that have been submitted to us at Bob T. Panda’s face book page.  If you are one of the wise people who have resisted FB’s siren song, send me a message here and I will privately contact you and give you an email address to submit pictures of your Babette de Panda paper doll.  Extra points are awarded for creative stories of Babette’s escapades as she rampages around the world.

This brilliant story came from Babette’s hostess in NYC at the Famed Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink:

I’m almost afraid to report–I lost sight of her for a few minutes and then heard cheers and applause as she apparently whirled and twirled her way around the rink. As i fought my way through the crowd, she climbed over the wall and I whisked her away lest she be overwhelmed by the adulation.

Thank you Frances, that was inspired, to say the least.

Prior to arriving in NYC, Babette had a whirlwind visit to Singapore where her very good friend Lucilla not only took her shopping ( Bob’s VISA card is still smoking) but also to a fabulous holiday concert at a very fancy concert hall, and then out to dinner.  (Note to Babette from Bob: Did you have to put the dinner tabs for EVERYONE in the restaurant on my AmEx card?)

At least she did not take cabs everywhere and occasionally took public transit.

And before she headed out for her around the world journey, she took a few days to relax on the southern California’s Malibu Beach. (oops, sorry, can’t find that photo right now!)

I hope everyone who was waiting for inspiration gets their entries in by our December 31, 2011 deadline for the 1st round of our contest! there will be actual prizes awarded, so don’t delay!

New From the Panda Channel: This Olde Den

the panda chronicles

Those who know me, know that my stance on housekeeping is unfortunately more like Bob’s than like Mehitabel’s.  Even so, I am addicted to shows on decorating on HGTV (or would be if I had a TV….good thing I don’t) and used to watch “This Old House” when Bob (!) Vila was the host.  I thought that this would be an excellent theme to harvest a few cartoons from before people run away screaming.

By the way, you still have time to enter the “Dress up Babette de Panda and photograph her somewhere” contest.  Go to the December 2nd post to get your printable Babette de Panda paper doll and her first outfit.  There are 3 more outfits that have been featured here in the past few weeks, or make your own outfit for Babette!  Post your pictures on Bob T. Panda’s Facebook page! Win valuable prizes!

A Vision in Black and White…A New Ensemble`

Why should zebras have all the fun?  Babette thought she needed a new outfit (avec un belle chapeau!) for all her jet setting… southern California one day, Singapore the next, then it’s off to the French Alps to get in a little time on the slopes with with a mystery panda!  So what could be more appropriate for a quick trip to the south of France (or maybe Disneyland?) than a glorious black and white striped asymmetrical ruffled blouse with a pleated skirt?  I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking, Ingrid Bergman; Casablanca….And her hat? Oh that hat!  Inspired by a little something her cousin Bai Yun of San Diego just “picked up”  around the den.

And what about the news that pandas are moving to France? Sacre` Bleu!  Cousins of Babette, no doubt.  Will Sweetie rake Sunshine over the coals for applying for the post in unfashionable Edinburgh, (haggis? ugh! when we could have had French pastries??) when Paris was on offer?  Stay tuned!

Panda-ing in a Winter Wonderland….

Well, Babette no sooner gets back from the beach, then it’s off to the frozen North for a Ski Vacation!  Babette is certainly  a “Bear on the Go” with her dashing through the snow alpine ski outfit.  Nothing says “Winter Wonderland” quite like Babette’s panda button quilted ski jacket and bamboo patterned cashmere scarf, scarlet ski pants and boot toppers knitted from cat fur left on the furniture!

And just who will be waiting at the bottom of the black and white diamond run as Babette comes shushing down the slopes?  Who will be ready to provide a hot cocoa and cuppycake feast in front of the roaring fire in the lodge?  Will it be the shy, but dependable Bob T. Panda?  Or, will  the dashing, devil may care artiste Claude Pandet be punching her lift ticket?

Rumor has it, Babette’s next vacation spot is “The Magic Kingdom”!

Tune in tomorrow to find out!

Babette at the Beach!

Beach bikini babette

We can’t thank new panda friend Sylvia C. enough for sending these photos of Babette taking a well earned mini-holiday at the southern California coast.  All that rain, wind, and foul weather just gets a panda down, don’t ‘cha know?  Babette is wearing a stunning blue and yellow polka dot bikini…not quite teensy weensy, because, well, let’s not go there OK?

babette and sand castle

As you can see here, it’s not all play and no work!  Babette has designed and built a sand castle model of the new wing of the Hospital for Indigent Pandas.  As you know, Babette founded this hospital in Greenbank WA, and spends many hours selflessly  tending to pandas with her tender touch.  (Her nurses outfit will be showing up any day now, to add to her wardrobe!)

babette in tide pool

Here we see Babette, examining some tide pool life.  In addition to her hospital work, Babette also has a degree in Marine Biology.  Or was it that she went to a sushi bar once? Whatever.  Soon Babette will be winging her way back to the frozen north, so that she can model her new ski ensemble!

PS…no, I don’t know why she went off to California without me.

I want to have a paper bear that I can call my own…..

I’d like, for a moment, to step out of character, and speak to you as the humble (or not so humble) narrator of The Panda Chronicles.  First, I’d like to thank all of you who have joined in the fun this year.  I say this from the bottom of my heart, that Bob T. Panda and his friends have become stronger and funnier because you all are watching.  Whether it’s high art or low art, art needs to be seen and appreciated to really exist.  It’s kind of like Tinkerbelle.  If you don’t believe in her, she’ll fade and die.  Poof.  Blapp.

I’d also like to say, that as a full time artist for more than several decades, that the pandas bring me FUN in a way that painting has not, in some time.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love painting, and it continues to bring joy, satisfaction and gratification (not to mention $$$) into my life.  Make no mistake about it, just because you love something, that doesn’t mean it isn’t work, particularly when you spend 40 or more hours a week engaging in it, not to mention all the “non-art” stuff you have to do in order to make a living at it.  Not that I’m complaining.  What other work can a person do at home with their cat on the drawing table?  Be that as it may, drawing pandas is FUN with a capital F.  Thinking up things for my pandas to do and say is even more fun and often makes me laugh out loud.  And yes, Virginia, there is a Mehitabel.  While she is named for a literary cat (from The Lives and Times of Archie and Mehitabel) she is an actual flesh and fur 15 year-old cat, who can still jump onto my drawing table from the floor.

Enough seriousness….

So here’s where the fun comes in. As a special present for Christmas/ Hanukah/ Kwanza/ Solstice or what ever the heck you want to celebrate this time of year, I propose a fun, interactive project.  Uh oh, you say.  Whenever my yoga teacher says she has something ‘fun’ for us, it usually means 74 sun-salutes with an extended hold in downward facing dog or some such nonsense.  No, this will actually be much more fun.  Introducing the Babette de` Panda paper panda!  And her first outfit!  Remember paper dolls? You cut them out and then you cut out all their little outfits (oops! Don’t cut off the tabs!) And then you change their clothes and have a party.  I’ll make a new outfit every now and again so that you can change Babette’s wardrobe. (She simply hates wearing the same outfit two days in a row!!)  Today’s pandas are presented in a higher resolution size than normal, so that you can print them out.  I suggest gluing Babette to a piece of cardboard so she can stand up.  You could print a whole army of Babettes and have a cocktail party!

Here’s the “interactive” part:  after everyone prints, cuts out, and dresses Babette in her outfit, I want you to photograph her and post the picture on Bob the Panda’s fan page on Face book.  Feel free to post your photograph on your own page or send it to your other FB friends.  You can even print out a little crowd of “Babettes” and have your own little choir de` Babette. I ask only a few things in return (oh, there’s always a catch, isn’t there?):

  1. You “like” the Bob the Panda page.
  2. You link back to The Panda Chronicles or “introduce” panda friendly people to Bob T. Panda
  3.  You may not put Babette on anything that is for sale.

Other than that, the only requirement is that you have fun with this.  I will come up with some sort of actual prize for the most creative photo of Babette submitted by December 31st.  A committee of Babette, her special friend, Victory and myself will determine the winner.

Technical note: It helps to print these on light cardstock, and glue an extra layer on “Babette” before cutting out.  You can the make a triangle out of light weight cardboard which has a fold at the bottom so that she can stand up.  I’m hoping the automatic resizing that happens when I put a picture on the blog doesn’t screw up the scale.  If it does, you may have to mess with print sizes a little bit.  Also, don’t separate the hat from the rest of the outfit.

Be the (funloving) Bear
