The Return of Inspector Panda…

Huzzah!!! Inspector Panda, with his superior intellect, his detectival abilities, his snappy wardrobe, and his snappier patter is sure to solve this latest mystery.

Yeah, right.

IMHO, it is time for Inspector Panda to take his rightful place, in the pantheon of fictional detectives.  Look out Inspector Lynley, here comes Inspector Panda!  Whaddya think?

Roadblocks make for quiet zoos….

…and what with the traffic diversion from Zoo Atlanta to The National Zoo in Washington DC, it was very quiet.  You must admit that it was a very sophisticated bit of hacking for a six month old panda!

Princess Pinky has declined to comment on the “incident.”  “i don’ kno nuffing bout it,” said Princess P. through her press office, “but did you see i is on da cobber of anudder magazine? pinky is a star!”

This is bad news for Panda Scout Cookie sales! (But you can get Girl Scout cookies through March 16th!)

Time to call in …Inspector panda!

Huzzah! I’m sure Inspector Panda will be able to sort it all out. Um…pretty sure….

Just when you thought it was safe to get back on the highway…

Squee.

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to use the “storyline” that came out of the realms of “Political Intrigue: New Jersey edition”…you know what I’m talking about. And who would be a better mastermind, than our nation’s first panda princess…but don’t tell!  There’s sure to be a cover-up.

George Washington Bridge lane closure satire.

Princess Pinky Bao Bao…what have you done now?

And while we’re talking politics, if you haven’t heard, a panda is running for mayor of Washington DC, you can read about his campaign on Twitter!  Is that cool or what? He has our support, for sure! Check him out on twitter at @PandaforMayorDC  Or, is it little Princess Bao Bao who has her eye on the prize? (Rumor has it, she’s getting ready to throw her tiara into the ring!)

Thanks again to all my Kickstarter supporters. My project was wildly successful, news will be breaking soon, so stay tuned.  (Better than wind breaking, I guess.)

The Panda Kindergarten is very talented….

Once again, our newest panda kindergarteners take to the stage to show you just how talented they are.

Fresh from their victory in the Giant Panda Zoo Awards, the Cub-lanta twins, Bert and Ernie, share the stage with (well, as much as she’ll let them) none other than Princess Pinky!

Meanwhile, over in Kickstarter land, Pandamorphosis is still going strong. As we move into the final 4 and a half days, you still have time to pledge your support to bring this project to it’s triumphant close.  Huzzah!

Fabulous Furry Friday ‘bears’ tribute…

…to some of my guiding lights of writing and illustrating for children.

You know how sometimes someone plants a little seed of an idea in your head, and for a while you don’t notice that it’s growing. Say for maybe, for example, 20 years or so, and then one day, it just springs forth with a great big duh!?

My friend, writer and teacher, Deb Lund and her husband Karl Olsen used to house sit for my landlords, when Deb and Karl first moved to Whidbey Island. I got to know them and they came to know and admire my artwork.  One day Deb said, “You know, you would be really good at illustrating children’s books.”  I said something like, “yeah, yeah, in my spare time,” because I was kind of on a fine art mission, and I didn’t want to get distracted.

So, fast forward 20 years and one day, after I had been panda-ing around with my cartoons for a year or so, it popped into my head that It.  Was.  Time, and so I called Deb up and said, “It’s time!!! NOW what do I do????” Deb pointed me in the direction of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)  and I went to a conference, started paying attention, took a class with Deb, and soon Pandamorphosis started on it’s long journey.

Don’t you just hate it when your refrigerator is infested by…pandas? Especially when you need a snack for a long journey!

There are some other big influences in my trip to writing and illustrating for children, but they are people I have never met.  (OK, one of them signed the book I bought, but that doesn’t really count.)  The author/illustrators I consider to be my primary guiding lights are Chris Van Allsburg, and David Wiesner. They create art and stories that inspire me.  The paintings they create for their books are brilliant in their own right, and when put in service of whatever tale they are telling, pure magic happens.

When I was making the rounds of publishers and agents with Pandamorphosis, one agent who turned me down commented, “don’t you think the artwork is too good for children’s books?

‘Scuse me?
I don’t think that’s possible.

So I will try, to do my duty, to art and illustration, to aspire to the quality of art and the rich and quirky story telling, of my heroes.

And here is a Fabulous Furry Friday Funny, cause, like, I did NOT forget!

And just how did the panda kindergarten get her address?

The Panda Olympics are on a tape delay…

….so here is Princess Pinky with a new episode!  (Apologies to Mr. Wu, for taking over Mr. Wu Wednesday, but he was um…busy.)

Never say "No" to a Pinky!

Never say “No” to a Pinky!

Remember, there are 9 more days to visit and pledge on Pandamorphosis on Kickstarter, and the same to have any Panda Chronicles Book purchases benefit Pandas International during February.  Huzzah!!!!

Princess Pinky Returns in our Salute to the Olympics

Princess Pinky is standing behind me and stamping her little (adorable) foot in impatience, but she is just going to have to wait a few seconds longer, while I send out a HUGE round of thanks to my Pandamorphosis supporters who showed up in the first 24 hours of my 15 day Pledge drive.  I will be listing names on the roll of honor as soon as I get Pinky’s new cartoon posted.

Sheesh! Mr. Wu was never this bad. (Or was he?)

Sochi Winter Olympics, Pandas

I keep hearing the song “bears on the Run” going through my head…the ski run, that is!

Thank you all again for supporting the Kickstarter campaign to fund Pandamorphosis.  Oh, you haven’t done that yet?  You can click the link on the side bar or this one right here.

Funding is already at 48% in the first 24 hours. You guys are the bears!

It’s the Year of the Horsie!

What with getting ready for our Kickstarter project ready to launch this week, and putting the finishing touches on The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu, we are way behind with everything else.

But here at long last, we bring you The Panda Chronicles Salute to The Year of the Horsie, as only Mr. Wu, the Twinkies, and Princess Pinky can salute! (Does this mean that Wu, Twinkies, and Pinky are the part of the new panda kindergarten class? I think you know the answer to that!)

Huzzah! It’s The year of Pandas on Horsies!

Uh oh, it looks like Princess Pinky found the latest hiding place for her magical wand.  Better find a new, better hiding place, mom!

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend. We woke to snow this morning, almost a whole inch! Hey, don’t throw stuff at me! It’s not like we don’t have our own form of lousy weather here in the Northwest!

Be the Bear,
Bob T. Panda

Stay tuned for some special announcements this week!

Pinky has a problem….

…with the results from the recent Giant Panda Zoo Awards.  Now, we’ve tried to reason with Princess Pinky, but she is completely inconsolable that she did not win the cubby of the year award.

“Doesn’t being a princess count for anyting?” she wails.

Bao Bao is unhappy

Could Mama Mei Xiang really be contemplating letting Pinky loose on the pandy kindy?

Meanwhile, Pandamorphosis plans are moving ahead, as I gather my wits and my materials to launch a Kickstarter project to take Pandamorphosis from random scattered drawings in my file drawer to the printed page.  Mark February 12th on your calendar, as that is my anticipated launch date.  Here is another of my favorite drawings from the book to whet your appetite for all things panda(morphosis):

An unexpected transformation!

An unexpected transformation!

I’ve been working on my list of rewards to entice you to support my quest to publish Pandamorphosis, including some of the original art! There is definitely a part of me that wants to keep all the drawings for myself, but in my long life as an artist, I’ve learned that I am happiest when my creations go out into the world to bring enjoyment to others.

If you are already on my mailing list, you will be receiving an update next week (OK, now I DO have to write it) and if you’re not, there’s still time to sign up for my mostly monthly newsletter.  Just go to the second form at the top of the right-hand column, that says, “Get even more pandas” and add your email address.  Mailchimp will take you through the sign-up process, and you can unsubscribe easily at any time.

Be the Bear and Happy Groundhogs Day.
