Salute to Meihem!!!!!!
Yes, the darling duo turns TWO this weeK, and all things Pinky aside, we are delighted to celebrate the Meihem’s big week! (For those of you who are new to panda watching, the Meihems are the twin cubs of Lun Lun and Yang Yang of the Cublanta Zoo …um I meant Zoo Atlanta…deep in the southern belle state of Georgia.
I remember the day they were born. I was watching the Zoo Atlanta panda cam and Lun Lun was in the den, and wouldn’t you know it a little cub just slid out. of…you know…the cub slidey place, and then not even a half hour later, here comes ANOTHER one! I immediately called one of the panda faithful, knowing she would be watching as well, and we yelled into our phones and jumped around our respective kitchens.
What a day!
We started off calling them The Twinkies, but when they got their real names at 100 days, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, we began to call them the Meihems, because when you have more than one panda cub, you are bound to have Meihem!
But of course, Mr Wu had had a whole year of being the center of attention, and he. was. not. pleased at this development.
And then there was the old gender misidentification thing. For the first four months, we thought they were boys…
So, once they were determined to be girls, appropriate measures had to be taken!
And in March of 2014, The Meihems joined the Panda Scouts, and have worn their uniforms proudly, ever since.
We hope you enjoyed this Tribute to Meihem, and if you would like to read ALL the cartoons about this dynamic duo, be sure to pick up a copy of The Panda Chronicles Book 5: Pandapocalypse NOW, starring the Meihems and Princess Pinky.
Be the bear!
Bob T. Panda
Be sure to stay tuned to our tribute to Mr. Wu later this month who turns THREE! Oh yeah, and um… someone else’s birthday is coming up in August… can’t quite remember whose…..
Loved this trip down Meihem Lane 🙂
That was fun, wasn’t it? next up will be a “Salute to Mr. Wu” whose THIRD birthday is coming up at the end of the month. One of his most devoted fans (other than me, of course) coined the name “Wee Wu” to describe him in the video of one of his well baby exams, where he got his first “binky”
In the words of the Wee Wu-Self, “dose gurls just wanted to have dere way wif my cute wu self!”
Now that he’s three, he is no longer “wee”, but this sweet panda boy still brings us such joy.
Okay, yeah, I’m way better at catchy slogans than poetry. So nice to see these memories of his Zoo Atpanda “rivals” again. The dynamic duo are the cutest little cookie sellers as well as stylish dressers.
You do have a way with slogans. For example, “Black, White, and Ready to Rumble” if I remember correctly. He will always be the “wee Wu” to me. What a bounty of pandas we have received! I hope there will be more to add to the cast of characters in short order.
I don’t need to tell you how inspirational pandas are. They are the happymakers and the more there are the happier we’ll all be.
Huzzah! I need some happy panda energy at the moment.
I’m overwhelmed. The bear news alone was overbearing. Whew! Glad the girtls got some cuppycakes anyway. Hope there are some cookies left to sell when the public gets there. ha!
Um…it’s entirely possible that Inspector Panda uh…is examining the cookies as “evidence.” Maybe their sale will be more successful next year.
I was that Panda faithful you called, Bob T. I remember the yelling and screaming that was happening on both coasts. It was a doublemint glorious day in the neighborhood (how’s that for mixing metaphors)!
I was pretty sure it was you. What a glorious day! I hope we get to do it again soon. Like real soon. Any updates from mama Mei’s ultrasounds?
After reading this I am reminded of how much I love your imagination and creativity. And the storytelling just warms the cockles of me heart. Many thanks for giving us the gift of your art and storytelling. It is amazing!
You are welcome! It is no fun telling stories if no one is there to hear them, and the same goes for making art. I have grown to love all of my panda creations and I am continually amazed how much they have their own minds about things, and how much other people connect with them. Thanks for being one of the “panda faithful” and for reading and writing to tell me how much you enjoy them. It makes what I do twice as much fun.
It’s also fun for me to see how much my cartooning skills have increased. I was complemented mightily the other day when Mr. badger commented on how expressive their expressions all were.
Oh yes, I do remember that fateful day. The Tarheel State was a Rock and Rolling, as I watched that birth. I think Atlanta was stunned, as they had never let us actually see cubbies “slide out out the shoot” verbage meaning no disrespect. After all, I am a Mommee too! I remember how stunned the staff at ZooAtlanta seemed on the moment of arrival of Cubby2!! Shortly afterwards they posted the ultrasound as if to say, we did not know.
My question for the future is, what happens if Meihem2 aligns with Mr Wu or perhaps The Minions3 Trio? The next time we see Mr Wu, will he be a gangly teenage boybear, with the panda equivalent of spots and pants hanging off his backside? What does the future hold? Only our creator knows, and Bob T. And Bob T remains closed silent…,. Because his mouth is full of cuppycakes. Lol.
Because this is fiction, I can keep the pandas at any age I want to. Yes, I have always had an urge to be all powerful, God-like, if you will. While Pinky, the mayhems, Wu and the gang have aged since their teeny tiny cub hood, I kind of like everyone where they are now, and so until I have narrative need (ooo! I like that phrase) to age them, I think I will use my magnificent powers to keep them just where they are. The minions too! I’m not sure who is going to align with whom. The pandas tell me what they want to do when I start to draw. Which I better start doing tout-sweet if I want to get anything done this week.
