Literature of the Panda and then some…

Fasten your seat belts, get a bootini and a cupcake because this is going to be one of those long posts.

Do you like my new book?

I want to take a little side trip from all things panda today, (mostly…except for The Literature of the Panda!) and talk about a book I’m reading. Today’s post is not completely devoid of pandas, since pandas and storytelling go together like, um…cuppycakes and frosting. I’ve been reading: This is What a Librarian Looks Like by Kyle Cassidy.

Now, in the interests of full disclosure, this book is written by another client of my agent Gordon, over at Fuse Literary, and he has been yammering on about it on social media since it’s recent publication. “What’s the big deal?” I thought. “It’s pictures of librarians? Why would I want to read that?”

Everything I know

Oh, but now that I am reading it, I see that it is that and so, so much more. To understand why I think this book is so significant, I need to share a little bit of personal history. I was a library kid. While my family owned some books, most of my reading material came from the public libraries in Pittsburgh, where I grew up. We mostly went to a smallish branch library not too far from home, but sometimes we’d go to the big Carnegie Library over in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. This was one of the grand libraries, that only a robber baron in good standing could provide to the little people of Pittsburgh.

Panda Satire Made Easy

Panda satire explained for you!

I didn’t have the happiest childhood, and one of the best ways to escape my families dysfunctional dynamics, was to stick my nose in a book and transport myself somewhere else. Anywhere else, by whatever means possible. I can tune out so completely while reading, you can stand in front of me and yell, and I won’t pay any attention. (Trust me, this has been done.) While I also loved to draw, there is no escape from reality like a really good book.

I don’t remember interacting with the librarians, beyond taking my piles of books to the counter and getting them stamped with the due date. I was a very shy child (why are you laughing? I really was) and I can’t imagine I would have started a conversation with an adult on my own initiative. But whoever you were, you librarians in Pittsburgh in the 60’s, you saved my life.

What a Librarian Looks Like does indeed have pictures of librarians from all over the world, but it also has statements about what they do, what they provide in this age of vast amounts of information flying through cyberspace, but also why what they do is so important. The passion they feel for their calling (because it is a calling) comes through in every sentence. The book tells some library history, as well as wonderfully thought provoking essays by writers who also have deep emotional histories with libraries. One of my favorites is by that rock star of the library world, Nancy Pearl, of Seattle Public Library and NPR fame. She is such a rock star that she even has her own action figure. Her essay about wanting to live in her childhood library rang so true. What better fortress to resist the world’s evils than the fortress that is full of the knowledge of all time?

What do you mean by “was?”

One of the stories that Kyle tells of a librarian’s personal history, moved me so much that I burst out in tears. Really! I think it was the idea that there was something she wanted desperately as a child, that she knew her family could not afford to provide, and she never forgot it. It stayed with her until she became a librarian herself and she found a way to provide this, and fought for the money to make it come true for other children.  I want you to read this book for yourself, and find the stories that reach in to your heart. I want you to find the stories that whisper in your ear and say, do you remember this?

I always wanted to be a painter, and I am immensely grateful for all the forces in the universe that allowed me to become one. I didn’t realize at the time, that I also really wanted to tell stories both with my paintings, and now with pandas. Through telling made up stories I hope to share the universal truths that bring our mutual humanity into being and focus.

You say sumi-e, I say Tsunami

Libraries are more important than ever. They are at the heart of community, in towns and cities, small and large. Librarians help people make sense of all the vast information that is out there, yammering for our attention. I hope every library in the country brings this book to live in their collection. Thank you Kyle, for thinking about this subject, and for bringing this book into the world.

Pandyland Security on Fezbook

I have been writing about privacy issues on Fezbook for YEARS! It’s no surprise to me that they are trying to look into your panty drawer. Oh. You didn’t know about that????

It’s 10 O’clock. Do you know who’s in your panty drawer?

Fabulous Furry Friday presents An Embarrassment of Pandas

I don’t know if it is true or not, but I have read that the collective noun for pandas is an embarrassment of pandas. If it’s not, it definitely should be. I mean have you ever watched them eat? While I work back here behind the scenes to formulate my response to the vile maligning of pandas on Foxxy “News,” I thought I would share some ‘toons of the archives of…um…Pandas Being Embarrassed!

I don’t know if this link will actually work or not, but here is Stephen Colbert taking about this segment on Foxxy “News”

First on the list, of course, since it is time for our annual salute to the Nixon Pandas, is this one:

I am only making some of this up.

Day 29: 31 Days of Pandas

Before there was Pinky, there was…the panda kindergarten!!

Oh me, oh my! The pandasphere is buzzing tonight! will Pinky win her division in the Global Giant Pandy Awards? Did Bubba get what he wanted for CrispMoss? What will happen when Pinky, the Meihems, Wu, and all the rest get home from their adventure? Will EVERYONE get grounded?

I guess you’ll have to tune in on Sunday for the conclusion of our story!

But in the meantime (and for the next few days) it’s STILL 31 Days of Pandas time!!!!

What could be more scottish than Pandas?

And it’s never too early to start getting ready for New Year’s Eve!

Day 28: 31 Days of Pandas

Only four more days of pandas! Oh my! But never fear, we will still be here when the clock chimes midnight on the 31st, with new ‘toons for the New Year! Huzzah! Before long, the resolutionists* will be clogging up my yoga class (*people who resolve to start going to yoga again, after 9 months or more of not showing up), crowding the vegetable and health food aisles at the grocery store and leaving the cookie aisle vacant. (Bwahahaha! More for me!!!!)

So here are the things that I resolve for the new year:

  1. Eat more frosting. There is no reason not to if we are all going to die in a nuclear apocalypse; our healthcare is gone, as is all government support for those in need.
  2. Resist  evil where ever it lifts it’s ugly head.
  3. Eat more frosting.
  4. Keep drawing pandas, and letting them speak their minds.
  5. Eat more…um…frosting.
  6. Get to yoga on time so a resolutionist does not take my spot.
  7. Eat more….you guessed it! Frosting!!!!!!

The panda kindergaten knows where you live.

The next episode! 101 Bebe Panda-Nations!

We are getting down to the end of the year, to the end of 31 Days of Pandas (SAD!!!!!!) and hopefully the end of the tRump reign of terror. Well, I might be jumping the gun on that one. Remember, it took 2 whole years to build the case against Nixon. Have faith, panda fans! After all, Mr. Mueller belongs to society of people named BOB, and that is exalted company indeed! Heh!

So, without further ado, let’s watch the next episode of 101 Bebe Panda-Nations!

How about that! Pinky DID save the day!

We hope you’ll come back for three more days of encore presentations for 31 Days of Pandas and then Sunday we’ll have the final episode of 101 Bebe Panda-Nations! Huzzah! Let’s put our paws together and make a wish for a kinder, gentler world. Yeah, yeah, I know. Well, at least let’s resolve to watch more panda videos. Here’s one of my favorites of pandas being ESPECIALLY helpful! Enjoy!

Day 26: 31 Days of Pandas

It’s Boxing Day, which is the day that, by tradition, Pandas all sit in boxes! Interestingly enough, cats like to sit in boxes too, which is why pandas are also referred to as “bear cats.” Um…you might want to check some other sources, as science is not my forte. (neither is math, just so you know.)

Meanwhile, It’s time to share more pandas from the archives for 31 Days of Pandas!

Huzzah! Sometimes it’s also about cats!

The irony of Mehitabel criticizing Pooh Bear for his wardrobe, does not escape me.

I’m not sure Mehitabel has anything to talk about.

…except when it is about Pinky.

Can you believe those Meihems? blaming everything on Pinky?

Happy 100th day Birthday! More frosting!

And this is where we were at, at the end of 2015!!!!

Episode 10: 101 Bebe Panda-Nations

And a Merry Christmas to you all!

My Saturday routine, for sometime, is to head up to my panda studio while still wearing my PJ’s, coffee in paw, and listen to NPR while I work on the weeks cartoons, by this time in the week, finishing up inking the previously penciled pages.

I was surprised this morning to hear a broadcast of The Vinyl Cafe, which was the last recorded and previously un-aired Christmas show, shortly before the show’s creator, Stuart McLean passed away from cancer. Stuart  was headed for treatment, but instead, he died within a very short time after this show was recorded. I started to tear up as I heard his voice, still so strong and full of life. His stories always made me smile. Sometimes they made me cry. His storytelling shoes are large. They will not be filled by me, but maybe someday someone will be able to, if not fill them, then walk beside them.

Telling stories is an important part of our lives. Sometimes stories are true. Sometimes we wish they were. We tell stories about the places we live, and the people we know there; the people we admire; the people we fear. We tell stories of the things people do, both the good things and the not so good. We’ve had a bit too much of the latter in the past few years. But there are so many people doing good things, even if they are drowned out in the news by the evil that some human beings inflict on others.

I hope that my stories of pandas bring light into your life. They make me happy to write and draw. I love every one of these pandas. I guess they are my imaginary friends. You can never have too many friends, imaginary or otherwise.

Peace and Pandas to us all…

Will Pinky save the day?

Day 23: 31 Days of Pandas

Wowee! We are already up to day 23 of 31 Days of Pandas!

It’s really tempting to want to focus on the ‘toons of last year so that we can keep the pain and horror of the events of the last 12 months alive, but somehow, I need some kinder and gentler pandas today.

Well, until Monday when the cubbies sing their straight from the hip version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentle Bears for you all.

I hope you enjoyed our encore production of It’s a Wunderful Life, starring the Wu Self and Bee, the bear, my favorite holiday classic! Tomorrow we return to 101 Bebe Panda-Nations for another episode!  Meanwhile, let’s spin the dial of the panda way-back machine and see what ‘toons pop up! Welcome to some new readers who found us by way of Twidder. We hope that they have a wonderful time rummaging through the archives and catching up with panda satire history!

Should Pandas pay their own way?

Wheel…of…PANDAS!!!!!

We should note that they really don’t let you do this anymore. I wonder why.

The Global Panda Awards are happening!

It’s true! This is a real thing! You can vote for your favorite pandas all around the world!
(Pinky: vote for pinky!!!!!!)
Ahem!

In honor of the Global Panda Awards, I have unearthed some toons written a few years ago when Pinky…um…campaigned heavily for several all of the awards that year. Enjoy!

Introducing Princess Dumpling

Wait a minute…triplets??????

Don’t tell me you’re surprised.

There’s still more 31 Days of Pandas to go and I have a special treat for you on Christmas! A fun sing along that will DELIGHT your most conservative relatives! And when I say “delight”, I mean make them stomp off without having dessert so you can have TWO pieces of pie! If I’m going down, I’m going down laughing.

Meanwhile, Vote early, vote often, VOTE PINKY!!!!!!!
