Meanwhile, we are all still reeling from the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The documentary about her (RGB) popped up on my library’s movie platform, so I watched it last night and may watch again tonight. (The perfect accompaniment to making little felt Ruth Panda Ginsbears) I could not be living the life I live without the groundbreaking work she did on her way to The Supremes!
Beside watching the movie about RGB, your spirit may be lifted by watching the well cubby exam that was posted by the Smifsonian Zoo! I recommend watching (at least) twice a day. The cubby squeaks alone are worth it!

I’m sure by now, everyone knows: Ruth Bader Ginsberg has left us. I believe she tried so very hard to stay until (hopefully. Goddess willing) Joe Biden is inaugurated as our next President. I swore loudly,, then cried, then swore some more, when I read of her passing.
People often say: “But what good does my one vote do? I am only one person.” Well, Ruth Bader Ginsberg was one person and a tiny one at that. I mean, my left leg probably weighs more than she did. And yet, she accomplished so much in her 87 years, work that had long lasting, revolutionary outcomes. Don’t believe me: Read Heather Cox Richardson’s tribute to her. (Have handkerchiefs handy!)
Upon hearing of Ginsburg’s death, former U.S. Attorney and law professor Joyce Vance tweeted, “We should honor the life of RBG, American hero, by refusing to give in, refusing to back down, fighting for the civil rights of all people & demanding our leaders honor the rule of law. This is our fight now.”
So I hereby refuse to give up, give in, or back down. I may only be an artist, shouting into the cyber void, but if I can use my talent to further the cause of justice by speaking out here, as a panda, then, by gosh I will.
At least through this election, I will not hold back my opinion on politics, justice, or anything else I feel strongly about. I’m not saying there will be no heartwarming panda stories, but I feel I need to be able to speak freely. If this is going to upset you, this may be a good time to take a break from reading The Panda Chronicles. I can’t fault anyone for that. There are a whole bunch of things I can’t read or watch or listen to right now.
I only ask a couple of things.
1. VOTE! If you’re not registered, please register as soon as you can
2. Understand that as an artist, I will not water down what I do for anyone, even if I like you.
3. VOTE
4. Support democratic candidates however you are able to.

5. VOTE as if all our lives depend on it. Because they do.

Wow, the smoke is still with us all up and down the west coast. Could this have anything to do with a sulfurous being visiting the left coast? I can’t help but picture “president” Swamp gaily skipping down through a forest, splashing gasoline in one hand, and tossing lit matches from the other.

Just so you know, I really appreciate your comments about how much my ‘toons help you get through these unimaginable times. Knowing that I am helping you helps ME. Every day brings a new assault. Not all of it is caused by “president”Swamp, but he shows no interest in helping anyone other than himself.
It’ a lot of pressure for a tiny baby panda. If this little ball of fluff knew that we are hanging on it’s every squeak and burp, I’m not sure what it would do. I am starting on a new story, which I hope to have the first episodes by the first week of October! Stay tuned for this, along with my regular Holiday Encore Presentations for Sundays, including A Halloween Carol, and everyone’s favorite, The Wizard of Wu!

The West is on fire, the pandemic is still raging, and our so-called “president” is raving. The only bright spot in the world at large is baby panda season! Our own Baby P (aka XT4, aka Four, aka Sweet Pea), born to the REAL power couple in DC, is now 3 weeks old. No news about prince or princess designation, Mommee Mei only relinquishes her cubby at night when she feels certain her treasure will not be plundered.
To celebrate (and to forget, at least for a few minutes, all that is wrong in the world) I’d like to share some baby panda ‘toons from the archives.

XT4 had their first one week Bearday on Friday, and is growing by leaps and bounds! Mommee Mei has not left the baby long enough for the nannies to swoop in and do a quick well cubby check, and take a little (very little) cheek swab so they can do a DNA test and we can find out what sort of royalty we are dealing with.
In honor of this auspicious occasion, we have not ONE but TWO brand new ‘toons. There is a lot of scary stuff happening out there. We need to take a deep breath, remember that Mittens is a scared, cornered animal, and we need to plan to be brave and vote him out. We need to talk whoever needs, off the ledge. Remind them we are not (yet) powerless, and to VOTE. (Preferably for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.) There are no “safe” states this year, where we can make a protest vote or worse, stay home. besides, there are state and local races and they are important too. It doesn’t take much time or effort to look them up on the inter webs. see what they say, and better yet, see who supports them and what THEY have to say.
But somewhere at the beginning of this long diatribe, I promised you BOTH a new ‘toon…the first ‘toon about our newest cubby, along with the conclusion of Bubba’s story of stocking up on “essentials”.
A new cubby! The possibilities are endless!

Yes, we have passed the first week of our new cubbies life. We are relieved, but not complacent! No. A new panda cub is a fragile thing, but so far all appears to be going well. XT4 is getting round, loud, and well loved by Mommee Mei.
I am going to hold on to this good news as hard as I can. I managed not to watch or listen to the RNC #FascistFest, but it was almost impossible not to hear some of the clips or analysis around the inter webs. If people vote early, and are not prevented from voting, we can wrest our country back from the grasping claws of tyranny. We must vote, we must remind our friends to vote, we must correct the vision that the forces of evil want to convince us is real.

What a week! I have successfully avoided watching any of the Mittens Reign of Terror All Lies All the Time Fascist Fest. Huzzah! The snippets I have seen were so horrifying I could not bear to watch another second.
FORTUNATELY, there is an excellent alternative! At the risk of overloading the Panda Cam viewership even further, the SNZ Panda Cam (All baby panda! All the time!!!) is the best antidote to whatever is troubling you. I realize that watching the panda cam is not going to fix all the problems we have right now, but it just might give you the strength to go back out and do what needs to be done. Also, today is Papa Bear’s birthday, and they are giving him a party!
Mei has given us several excellent views of the bebe panda (who already has their own Twidder account) now that XT4 is FIVE whole days old and growing round as we speak!

While we wait for me to do a new ‘toon celebrating the birth of our latest cubby, heart of our hearts, the miracle panda, born in the midst of a pandemic and in the perils we face as a nation, an event that signifies hope.
In one of her fabulous stories (in which all the panda cubbies are much better behaved and respectful to their elders than the cubbies in these pages) Aunty Lucilla points out that our newest cub shares his/her birthday with Hua Mei, born in San Diego to Bai Yun and Shi Shi. Hua Mei was the first surviving cub born in the US and has become quite the hero mom herself. But this newest miracle cub, will be the last born to the current group of pandas who reside in the US. There were questions as to whether Mei Xiang was too old to have another cub. (Mei Xiang: I knew I could do it. Have a little faith)
It is the end of an era, although I hope not the end of having panda families in the US. They bring so much joy to us all. Because this is my world, and I get to make the rules of this world, I get to keep Pinky, Bubba, the Meihems and Mr. Wu all here to inhabit my stories.

While we wait until I have a chance to create the introductory ‘toon to welcome our new arrival, we do have one or two (ahem!) more ‘toons to celebrate the birthdays of Pinky and Bubba. Mei Xiang, panda mom extraordinaire, had her fourth surviving cub* on Friday, August 21st at 6:35 PM. Do you think she planned so that these 3 siblings would have their birthdays on three consecutive days?
