Hey! Guess what’s coming up this Sunday morning in the teeny tiny hours when all good little pandas are asleep? That’s right! It’s time to Spring Forward…um…or is that Spring Back? I can never remember! whatever it is, I can pretty much guarantee that I will either be an hour early or an hour late for yoga on Sunday morning!
And if it’s time to turn the clock forward, it means we are nearing the end of the annual Panda Scout cookie Sale!
And that means, Easter is right around the corner…
And…um…don’t forget, I have a new book out!!!!

First of all, a big panda thank you to everyone who made a donation to the ACLU or Planned Parenthood so far. You have all of February to do so and get some very cool, not-available-in-any-store panda swag stuff. I’ll do my best to get stuff to you in a timely manner. See yesterday’s post for details! and per my campaign promise to provide a little lighter fare every Friday, so that everyone keeps laughing, (or fiddling while Rome burns?) here are some ‘toons from the past to keep the country’s humor deficit from reaching an apocalyptic level!
And a heads up, I am starting to compile the next collection of Panda Chronicles ‘toons in book form! It’s been a long time coming!

One of these years I need to do a groundhog day cartoon!
It was bad enough that we lost David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and so many other great talents last year, including Carrie Fisher (and her mom, Debbie Reynolds!) but the final insult to injury was the loss of my beloved cat, Mehitabel. She has been a part of my life and a part of my art since before I can remember, well…at least for the last 20 years. The force was strong in that cat, and she pretty much had me wrapped around her dainty little paws.
Because she was such a part of my life and such an important member of my cast of characters here at the Panda Chronicles, I decided that she would remain here. After all, I am not letting go of Pinky or the Meihems, despite their recent (Meihems) and impending (Pinky) departure to China. So Mehitabel will remain, in a somewhat metaphysical state. After all, SOMEONE has to keep all those pandas in line!

I just read of a cartoonist who has found a way to use her talent to contribute to some of her favorite non profits. It really is pretty brilliant, and so I am going to say a big, pandy thank you to her, and then STEAL HER IDEA!!!!! I have been feeling the pain of not having the resources to donate meaningfully to these organizations, and this is a way to see if I can make a difference.
So here’s the deal:
Donate $50 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get a signed copy of a cartoon, with a hand drawn sketch on it.
Donate $100 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get 2 signed cartoons with a hand drawn sketch on them.
Donate $500 to either the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and get an original hand drawn cartoon of my* choice (unframed) (* you can tell me who your favorite panda characters are and I will make a selection based on that info)
Just send me a screenshot of your donation receipt dated between January 31st and February 28th, along with your mailing address, and I will send them out as I receive them. US addresses only, please. Send info/receipt to yourbrainonpandas@gmail.com. Let’s see if we can raise some $$ for these organizations! Pandas are standing by!
Yes, Chinese New Year, otherwise known as the Lunar New Year, starts tomorrow (January 28th, 2017) and continues until February 15th! This is the year of the Rooster. That sounds harmless, right? How much trouble can the panda kindergarten get into dressed up like chickens?
It was interesting to read this article, because I was unaware of some of the traditions associated with this event. Like, you’re not supposed to do any cleaning the first three days of the New Year, because you could wash away good fortune. Well, I can live with that. Um…I hardly ever clean anything. Was that too much information?
Anyway, we’ll have a brand new ‘toon for you on Sunday, but for today’s encore presentation, I thought I would post some of my favorite Chinese new year ‘toons from years past.
And, of course, my personal favorite…

I’m late! I’m late! I don’t know what happened to me yesterday, but I just couldn’t compel myself to get today’s post ready yesterday, and deciding it was more important to finish the new ‘toons, I decided to delay, but not delete! So onward, with day 10 of 31 days of pandas!
Comics are really big in Europe and Great Britain. I’ve visited cartoon museums in Brussels, Belgium in addition to this one. There are several museums in the US, including a really big collection at Ohio State University, The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. This is definitely on my “places to visit” list! Mini Bob insisted on being photographed here, despite the “No Photography” sign. He is such a rebel! Like the museum we visited a few years ago in Belgium, this one had a wonderful display of political cartoons, going back a couple hundred years. Just saying!

Yes, I am panda-ing on, even in the face of my unease over what is to come after this devastating outcome to the election of 2016. Panda on, Panda on! We must panda on. We have lost so many bright stars from the sky: Gene Wilder, Leonard Cohen, Alan Rickman (sob), Prince, David Bowie, Bob Elliott, Harper Lee, Gwen Ifill, Muhammad Ali, Elie Wiesel (what must he be thinking right now?) and so many more. Some of my panda friends on Facebook have lost those nearest and dearest to their hearts.
Must we go on? In the words of Gene Wilder in his role in Blazing Saddles, “We must, we must.”
Yes, there IS a Panda Chronicles Coloring Book! Get it HERE!
And if you are looking for the perfect holiday accompaniment to your breakfast table…

Have a Fabulous Furry Friday
Sigh…another cycle of the MacArthur Foundation Awards have come and gone, and yet another year when Panda Satire has not been recognized. There is a bright spot, however, even if it did not come to me personally. One award went to Gene Luen Yang, a graphic novelist, who is also the current US Ambassador of Children’s Literature. This is at least the second graphic novelist who has received this award, so I am taking this as an excellent sign that my graphic novel will get published and maybe even sell well. What the heck! Might as well be optimistic about the whole thing, right?
And in other news, for the last week, they have been announcing the winners of The Nobel Prize in various categories, with the Nobel Prize for Literature having been announced yesterday. Once again, Panda Satire has been ignored.
This just in!!!! The Nobel Prize for Literature goes to: The very Bob Dylan! I have always thought that he was one of the most profound poets to ever strum a guitar, and I couldn’t be happier! (Well, unless they awarded a prize in Panda Satire, but like that’s ever gonna happen.) Huzzah and congratulations to Bob Dylan (aka the other “Bob”) on this well deserved honor.
I just found out that October 1st was 24 hour comic day. Obviously I have been way too busy to find out in good time that this was happening. I will try to do better next year. In the meantime, here are some more panda classics for this Fabulous Furry Friday!
Have a great weekend! Stay tuned for more from Pinky’s campaign to achieve the Pink House!

Mei Xiang should be so pleased and proud! The level of sibling cooperation between Pinky and Bubba has reached an all time pinnacle! And Bubba is getting so smart about the cyber! heh! As a veteran of a number of Kickstarter campaigns, I think Bubba is very well prepared and has thought things through really well.
Well, he thought of everything except the all seeing eye of Mommee!
And thanks to the wonderful world of useless information that makes up the internet, I have learned that today is Take your Teddy Bear to Work Day! Really! Cordelia’s mom: get Teddy Rosalie ready for a day at the office!

There have been rumors that this day was coming. The pandas in the news today are none other than the Cublanta twinkles (version 1.0) Mei Lun and Mei Huan, collectively known to those who love them, as the Meihems. They are also known here in The Panda Chronicles as Bert and Ernie, Panda Scouts extraordinaire! The deal with our rental pandas is that cubs that are born in the US (and other countries that host pandas) are sent to China sometime after they turn 2. Mostly, we have been able to keep them till they are four, and in some cases (like Xi Lan, also of Cublanta) till they were five. It was officially announced last week that the Meihems would be going to China this fall, most likely in November.
I don’t like it any more than you do, but that’s the deal we made, so that’s the deal we have. Fortunately for panda satire, I can keep them here as long as I want. Like most long running comics, characters come and go, or recede into the back ground. That is not my intention here, but as a dedicated pantser, I can’t tell you from one day to the next where my stories are going.
Want more from Pinky and the Meihems? You DO have The Panda Chronicles Book 5: Pandapocalypse NOW! don’t you? You don’t? Why the heck not? Take care of that right away, ‘kay?
And if you have a chance to get down to Cublanta before the Meihems leave (and I hope you do) say hi for me, and tell them Bob sent you!
Be the Bear,
