And now for the Sunday Special!

Special what? Oh, I don’t know…I was looking for a word to go with “Sunday”, and “special” popped into mind. Just ignore me. It’s OK.

Well, meanwhile on the Pandamorphosis front, preparations are proceeding apace to launch Pandamorphosis into the world.  Thanks to all of those who have offered their support, not only with my Kickstarter project, but also with the upcoming book launch, now scheduled for April 16th (yes, THIS April 16th) just in time for International Panda Day.  And no I am not making this up!

Meanwhile Friend to Pandas, Henry Nicholls posed the question, “which would the panda kindergarten prefer: Regular Pepsi or new Pepsi Max? ”

Whichever one has more sugar in it would be my guess. Afterall, scientists have now determined that pandas have a “sweet tooth.”  Hello? cuppycakes?  Just sayin’.

enquiring minds want to know....

enquiring minds want to know….

And a quick note, I’ll be participating in the A to Z challenge, where I will be posting daily for the month of April.  We are to use a letter theme for each day (A to Z, right?) Ah, if only every day could be the letter “P” but I’m sure somehow I’ll manage to make everything panda related.

Till Tuesday, then,

It’s Fabulous Furry I-almost-forgot Friday

Oh my!

I have been so busy getting Pandamorphosis ready to make it’s way into the world, that I completely forgot that it was Fabulous Furry Friday. This will not stand, Man.

Here are some classics from the panda archives!

is it....

is it….

...time for....

…time for….

...a little something?

…a little something?

Last week I was looking for this cartoon, as there had been some footage of wild pandas captured by hidden cameras. Smile, you’re on Pandid camera!

The secret lives of the wild panda!

The secret lives of the wild panda!

And another reader asked what the inside of my head looked like, in order to come up with all my goofy ideas….

What's that stuff getting all over my paws? Oh...it's frosting!

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! Stay tuned for more news about Pandamorphosis! It’s coming and it’s coming SOON!

Road from Cublanta…Go, Twinkies, Go!

What could be more exciting than a road trip, especially when you have an adorable yellow car and a good kerfuffle in store for you at the end of the road?

And, yes, Inspector Panda does have his very own Twitter account.  You can find him at @NoirPandas on Twitter.  He would really like it if you followed him.  Maybe you could help him with this case.

Inspector panda

Will the twins get a merit badge for their road trip? Will Lun Lun fess up to where the girls are? Will Inspector Panda get a clue, or at least more twitter followers. Stay tuned!

I want to give a quick shout out of thanks to all who have bought The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu since it’s release just a couple of weeks ago.  Huzzah! not to mention, shazaam! I’m also happy to see that there must be some newcomers to the world of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire, because you’ve bought the earlier books too. You are the bears!

And speaking of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire, we now have our own Facebook page.  Head on over if you are a facebookian, and give it a like. Or a cuppycake.  But don’t get frosting in your keyboard.  It is a bear (ha ha, get it?) to get out.

Till next time,
Be the Bear!

Roadblocks make for quiet zoos….

…and what with the traffic diversion from Zoo Atlanta to The National Zoo in Washington DC, it was very quiet.  You must admit that it was a very sophisticated bit of hacking for a six month old panda!

Princess Pinky has declined to comment on the “incident.”  “i don’ kno nuffing bout it,” said Princess P. through her press office, “but did you see i is on da cobber of anudder magazine? pinky is a star!”

This is bad news for Panda Scout Cookie sales! (But you can get Girl Scout cookies through March 16th!)

Time to call in …Inspector panda!

Huzzah! I’m sure Inspector Panda will be able to sort it all out. Um…pretty sure….

It’s Panda Scout cookie time!

I don’t know how Panda Scouts in the Pacific Northwest do it… It’s been raining like crazy, so going door to door to sell cookies or setting up in front of the grocery store is hardly an option….there are even rumors of snow for this weekend.

On my honor, I will try...to eat as many cookies as I possibly can....

On my honor, I will try…to eat as many cookies as I possibly can….

On the other hand, there may not be so many cookies left to sell, so maybe it’s not a problem.

And as we mentioned on Wednesday, It’s almost time for The Academy Awards Ceremony. Here is one of my favorites for an encore presentation.

What will Christopher Robin say about this?

What will Christopher Robin say about this?

Today is the last day, in fact we are in the last few hours of my Kickstarter campaign to fund Pandamorphosis. Hope you’ve had a chance to stop by and see what else comes out of my studio. (panda-wise, that is). You have until 1 PM PST to join in the fun.

Thank you all so much for your participation, in bringing Pandamorphosis to life!

Fabulous Furry Friday ‘bears’ tribute…

…to some of my guiding lights of writing and illustrating for children.

You know how sometimes someone plants a little seed of an idea in your head, and for a while you don’t notice that it’s growing. Say for maybe, for example, 20 years or so, and then one day, it just springs forth with a great big duh!?

My friend, writer and teacher, Deb Lund and her husband Karl Olsen used to house sit for my landlords, when Deb and Karl first moved to Whidbey Island. I got to know them and they came to know and admire my artwork.  One day Deb said, “You know, you would be really good at illustrating children’s books.”  I said something like, “yeah, yeah, in my spare time,” because I was kind of on a fine art mission, and I didn’t want to get distracted.

So, fast forward 20 years and one day, after I had been panda-ing around with my cartoons for a year or so, it popped into my head that It.  Was.  Time, and so I called Deb up and said, “It’s time!!! NOW what do I do????” Deb pointed me in the direction of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)  and I went to a conference, started paying attention, took a class with Deb, and soon Pandamorphosis started on it’s long journey.

pandamorphosis illustration

Don’t you just hate it when your refrigerator is infested by…pandas? Especially when you need a snack for a long journey!

There are some other big influences in my trip to writing and illustrating for children, but they are people I have never met.  (OK, one of them signed the book I bought, but that doesn’t really count.)  The author/illustrators I consider to be my primary guiding lights are Chris Van Allsburg, and David Wiesner. They create art and stories that inspire me.  The paintings they create for their books are brilliant in their own right, and when put in service of whatever tale they are telling, pure magic happens.

When I was making the rounds of publishers and agents with Pandamorphosis, one agent who turned me down commented, “don’t you think the artwork is too good for children’s books?

‘Scuse me?
I don’t think that’s possible.

So I will try, to do my duty, to art and illustration, to aspire to the quality of art and the rich and quirky story telling, of my heroes.

And here is a Fabulous Furry Friday Funny, cause, like, I did NOT forget!

And just how did the panda kindergarten get her address?

It is Kickstarter eve!

Oh my! It’s kind of like birthday eve and Christmas eve all rolled into one.  You never really know how a Kickstarter campaign is going to go till you are actually in the middle of it,  but I have been working on this book for so long, and have  had so many enthusiastic comments about it, that I believe that you all are going to sweep me off my fuzzy feet.   (You do celebrate your birthday eve, don’t you?)

Huzzah!

Here’s another of my favorite drawings, of the cat telling the stuffed panda just what is what, and who is the boss and the most loved around here.

“I am the favorite around here and don’t you forget it!”

I have apparently messed up the link for the preview of the Kickstarter project in the email I sent out earlier today, but I think I will ask you to go with the excitement of anticipation a bit longer. I will post the link to the live project here and other places as well!

Tomorrow at Noon PST I will let loose the bears on an unsuspecting world. Be ready.

It’s the Year of the Horsie!

What with getting ready for our Kickstarter project ready to launch this week, and putting the finishing touches on The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu, we are way behind with everything else.

But here at long last, we bring you The Panda Chronicles Salute to The Year of the Horsie, as only Mr. Wu, the Twinkies, and Princess Pinky can salute! (Does this mean that Wu, Twinkies, and Pinky are the part of the new panda kindergarten class? I think you know the answer to that!)

Huzzah! It’s The year of Pandas on Horsies!

Uh oh, it looks like Princess Pinky found the latest hiding place for her magical wand.  Better find a new, better hiding place, mom!

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend. We woke to snow this morning, almost a whole inch! Hey, don’t throw stuff at me! It’s not like we don’t have our own form of lousy weather here in the Northwest!

Be the Bear,

Stay tuned for some special announcements this week!

It’s Chinese New Year AND Fabulous Furry Friday!

WEll, it’s a good thing that Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days, which will give me a chance to do a new cartoon or two for this year.  Which is, of course, the Year of the Panda and…oh wait…what? It’s not the year of the panda?

Then when IS the year of the panda? What do you mean there isn’t one?

I need to sit down for a minute and…um…maybe have a cuppycake or two. But first, take a look at the video I made in preparation for the launch of my Kickstarter project to help get Pandamorphosis published:

In the meantime, here are some encore presentations of Chinese New Years past!

Be the Bear, and don’t forget you can support Pandas International by buying my books! starting February 1st (that’s tomorrow!)

Bob T. Panda

Huzzah for Pandas International!

Because Mr. Wu got soooooo much screen time in December, he has graciously allowed us to pre-empt his weekly forum today.   (XLW: what dat mean grasshusly? is dat ’bout bamboo?)

We are big fans of Pandas International for many reasons.  First, they do stuff for pandas (and as we have said before, without pandas, there could be no panda satire!) But also, for some strange reason, they think we’re pretty funny! So of course we can’t help but jump up and down and say, “They like me! They really like me!”

They have asked us to share some of our cartoons with them, for Christmas cards and for their annual auction program. When given the challenge of coming up with a cartoon for a fairly straight/serious subject, it is fun to see where my mind takes me.  Last year’s funding focus was for enrichment items to keep the pandas entertained.  Of course I had to have my own point of view:

I am such a dork.

I am such a dork.

This year, they would like to help fund laboratory equipment and so I came up with this idea for a cartoon for their program.

pandas in the laboratory

Can you calibrate the cuppycake?

But this was not quite enough help to lend to pandas, and so I thought I’d have a special promotion.  To help support the work that Pandas International does, I have decided (because, you know, I’m the decider around here) that for each and every Panda Chronicles book sold through either Amazon or my Createspace stores during the month of February 2014, I will donate $1 to Pandas International.  Really!

The panda Chronicles supports Pandas International

It’s just like the panda says! Buy my book and real pandas benefit!

So, if you were thinking about adding to your collection of Panda Chronicles books, February would be a great time to do it.  There are now 3 books in the series, starting with The Panda Chronicles Book 1: Your Brain on Pandas, moving on to The Panda Chronicles Book 2: Wheel…of….Pandas! and my most recent release, The Panda Chronicles Book 3: Nobody Expects the Panda Kindergarten!  and soon, very soon, maybe even before the end of February (no pressure, of course) The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu, which contains all the cartoons to date starring Mr. Wu!  It will start with his early days in the den and continue with all five of his extended play adventure stories! Huzzah!

I know I always say this, but this really is my best book yet.

So…support pandas, buy my books and be there bear!
