Join the Panda March this Saturday!

If you want to be where the action is the day after THE DAY AFTER, be sure to join one of the Women’s Marches that will taking place around the country. And yes, I put the phrase The Day After in scary SHOUTYCAPS/ all bold typing in reference to one of those post apocalyptic movies about the end of the world. The pandas are planning to march and I hope you will too. We are having a local march in Langley and I plan to attend. Maybe we’ll all go out for coffee and cuppycakes after. It’s shaping up to be that kind of week.

Join the #WePreferPinky Movement today!

I’d like to thank writer Deborah Underwood for coming up with the term “SHOUTYCAPS” to describe the feeling you get when someone writes in all capital letters. That’s why they pay her the big bucks. (Actually, hardly any writers for children make big bucks, so if you are looking for some really fun books for kids in your life, do check out her books at your local bookstore or on her website! She and her cat will thank you!)

Day 31: 31 Days of Pandas Happy New Year

Well, we’ve done it again. We have completed 31 days of panda goodness, coming to you from the desk and archives of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. I hope you have had fun revisiting some of your favorite ‘toons, or if you are new here this year, that you have gotten a little taste of panda satire, and like a really good potato chip, it has you coming back for more. What better way to say hello to the new year than with panda satire? And no, despite how flattered I am to be asked, we will not be doing 365 days of pandas. I do need a bit of time to actually write and draw all of the panda ‘toons that I share with you here.

As far as I can see into the future (which, granted, my eyesight is not as good as it used to be,) I will always make my ‘toons here available for you to read, without any kind of subscription or fees. However, if you would like to support panda satire, I am grateful to have people buy my books here. That helps keep the ink flowing, the lights on, and the coffee perking so I can keep bringing panda goodness to you.

I am also considering starting a Patreon account, so that people can more directly support my efforts of the last 8 years. I haven’t done it yet, but I am thinking about it. If you have an opinion about this, please feel free to share it with me.

I may also run a Kickstarter campaign later this year in order to complete a very special project. More about that later. :o) It does involve pandas.

But now, let’s say BUH-BYE to 2016, don’tletthedoorhityouonthewayout with the panda kindergarten! Happy New Year !!!

Day 30: 31 Days of Pandas

Holy Moly! It’s day 30 of 31 Days of Pandas! We are almost at the end as the ball in Times Square makes its descent into the unknown. We have lost so many treasured, talented individuals this year, and now we have to add yet another to the list (as if Gene Wilder, Carrie Fisher, and Alan Rickman weren’t loss enough!) Yes, the father and grandfather of so many pandas, particularly the US pandas, Pan Pan passed away yesterday at the age of 31. He was quite a bear with the ladies and fathered 30 cubs and has over 130 descendants. He was really da bear! Farewell, Pan Pan. You will shine brightly in panda heaven.

But now, the conclusion of the Twelve Days of CrispMoss! Are you ready to sing?

HOW many more days are there?

31 Days of Pandas: The Year in Review

We are grinding down to the very last days of the year, and what better thing to do than to review some of my favorite ‘toons from the past 12 months? Also I have run out of Mini Bob travel photos, so there is that too!

One of the things that happened this last year was I got an agent! Huzzah! Right now he is working on getting my graphic novel (about pandas, of course) out into the world. One of the things I am learning, is that publishing is a long process, but when you have someone who loves your story, you have a better chance that the right home will be found for it. Pseudo thumbs crossed. You’ll be the first to know when that happens.

Here’s my ‘toon about finding my agent…

Do you smell smoke?

I like to listen to the radio to find ideas for ‘toons. Here’s one about a new study on “healthy eating.” It was a study. It must be true.

Inspired by a TRUE story!

And here is another story about an important scientific finding...No fake news stories here!

Well, it is kind of funny, isn’t it?

Ha ha! This still makes me laugh! Tune in tomorrow for another brand new ‘toon!

Day 23: 31 Days of Pandas

I think it is time for that OTHER holiday classic, The Twelve Days of CrispMoss! Huzzah! Now a 31 Days of Pandas classic! Feel free to sing along! (We”l have the second part next Friday, for Christmas Eve Eve!)

Is everybody ready?

feel free to sing along.

I can’t hear anyone singing…..

I swear, I had nothing to do with Pinky’s let night sit in.

four pandas sneaking…

…and a Pinky in a Hemlock tree!

FIIIIIVE cuppycakes!

Panda On!

A big pandy thanks to all who have bought books this month! Um..don’t stop now, just when it’s getting good!

And don’t forget to have your holiday mug filled with hot cocoa and those little tiny marshie-mallows!

Have yourself a Pandy little Christmas…

Day 14: 31 Days of Pandas

Here we are, almost halfway through 31 Days of Pandas! I have been saving this picture for a while, because I wanted to share it on a day when we all need a little lift, and I think the time is now.

One of the most favorite things about my recent trip to London, maybe destined to be my favorite experience in my entire life, was getting to see original sketches, up close and personal in the Victoria and Albert Museum study room. I first found out that a person could actually call up the museum and make an appointment, and tell them, “I would like to see this…” and they would say yes, and then you would do it –  from reading this blog post.

Since I have loved Winnie the Pooh from the time we first met, and that the original drawings by Earnest H. Shepard made me want to be an artist, the idea that I could hold one of his drawings in my hands was something I never thought was possible.

Of course, Mini Bob went along on my visit to the study room, and wanted his picture taken.

31 days

Mini Bob, hanging out with Pooh Bear and thinking about a snack

Can you believe they let Mini Bob get this close to an original pencil sketch?

But now, without further folderol, here is today’s ‘toon, where we see the aftermath of Bubba’s overindulgence in cuppycakes, not to mention what a good mom Mei Xiang is….

31 days

Oh come on…hasn’t that ever happened to you? One minute there are two dozen cuppycakes just sitting there, and the next minute they’re gone?

Panda On

By the way, several people were asking for a poster of Yoga for Pandas. I designed one, but when I went to Cafe Press, where I sell products with my pandas on them, I found that they did not have a good size of posters. But having designed the graphic, I though I would put it on a few other items, while I search around for another way to make posters available. Here’s one of them, and you can see the others here. I’m still working on some Bubba things. sorry not to have them in time for Christmas, but there you have it.

Day 11: 31 Days of Pandas

Not that this means anything, but in 2 days, we will have a palindromic number designation: 13:31. I know, I know. Who cares, right? All we really care about is whether there is a new cartoon to read and is Bubba in it and did the Russians hack into the data base at The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire? And not that this number is significant in any way, but last Wednesday’s cartoon was the 100th new ‘toon of the year, and is it not some kind of cosmic coincidence that tomorrow is the Cublanta Twins’ (version 2.0) 100th day birthday! Can’t wait to hear what their official names will be be. Of course here, they shall forever be known as Six and Seven, thanks to the quick thinking of Atlanta panda fan, Stacy Watts. Naming rights on the Panda Chronicles Pantheon of Pandas will get you…um…I’m sure it will get you something. I just don’t know what.

But First, today’s travels with Mini Bob…

Mini Bob plays the Palace

Well, not THE Palace, but a smallish (at least in terms of palaces, in general) palace at Kew Gardens. Note that we had something resembling sun that day.

And now, on with today’s ‘toon, where we rejoin our story of Pinky’s disappointment, with a little bit of Bubba’s real life tummy ache thrown in for good measure.

pandas

Ruh Roh…I’m gonna hurl!

Poor Bubba! While in real life, Bei Bei had a lemon sized lump of bamboo stuck in his intestine, I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of this ‘toon if Bubba ate a few too many cuppycakes. And who doesn’t hate listening to someone else toss their…um…cuppycakes?

Meanwhile, Christmas (which according the certain Republican lawmakers is now allowed to be named again, and Starbucks will be punished if their Holiday cups aren’t Christmas-y enough) is closing in and besides donating to your favorite charity, I hope you will also decide that your nearest and dearest could really use a good laugh this year. And what better laugh-i-gator is there, besides the whole Panda Chronicles book series? Huh?

Day 7: 31 Days of Pandas

And now, 31 Days of Pandas returns to our story which was interrupted by our…um…rant about whether we were allowed to have an opinion or not. Word to the wise, do not make a panda mad! Anyway, we left our story with Pinky at home, hiding under the covers as she tried to come to grips with the fact that she lost the election, and not only that, that the forces of evil and self interest had won by possibly sly and devious means. At the very least, the “winning” ticket has an interesting relationship with the truth, by which we mean that they lie like a rug.

But while the possibility that democracy would come screeching to a halt, lying twisted and smashed as if it were a speeding car that had hit a bridge abutment after skidding on a banana peel, a bigger catastrophe was taking place, just down the road at the National Zoo, and it had nothing to do with the 39,465,975 gallons of pink paint that Pinky had stored at the elephant house.

Bubba had a medical crisis!

Yes! the real life Bubba, aka Bei Bei, our junior panda in the seat of power, was not feeling well, from what turned out to be a lemon size wad of un-digested bamboo that was stuck in his intestine. He was hauled off to the hospital, where kind and dedicated, not to mention skilled veterinary surgeons removed the obstruction, sewed him back up, and sent him home to mom, who gave strict instructions to rest, play quietly inside, and for crying out loud, chew before you swallow! Dinner time is not a race! At least I think it was Bubba’s mom who said  this. I might be remembering someone else.

But first, this happened:

31 days of pandas

Meihems to the rescue

And for today’s #TravelsofMiniBob offering, we bring you Mini Bob posing with a portrait of someone who is a shining beacon for all who toil in the gardens of children’s literature. Of course I am referring to that pioneering writer and artist, Beatrix Potter. Her portrait resides at The National Portrait Gallery in London, which is one of my favorite museums, especially when you skip the floor with all the dour looking folks in black coats and big ruffly collars, and head straight to the 19th century.

Beatrix Potter

Look how excited Mini Bob is to pose with one of his heroes!

Until I saw the movie Miss Potter, I did not know that Beatrix Potter was the mother of the Land Trust movement in England; she bought and donated over 3,000 acres of open farmland in the Lakes District in England, thus ensuring it’s preservation for all to enjoy. She also licensed the use of her images on pottery, stuffed animals, and whatnot, thus ensuring that she could buy all this land and save it for the likes of us. It’s no wonder she is a hero to Mini Bob!

Day 5: 31 Days of Pandas

Oh yes! Mini Bob got some cuppycakes and brought them back to our London Flat, and then all hell broke loose. The was frosting and cake crumbs everywhere! Reminds me of one of my favorite Allie Brosh stories, The God of Cake. I discovered her blog Hyperbole and a Half a few years after I started my descent into pandas, finally coming to live on the island of misfit pandas. Go read it. I’ll wait.

And now, for 31 Days of Pandas #TravelsOfMiniBob

pandas

just a little bit of frosting, pleeeeeese?

And now that we are in the deep trenches of the holiday shopping season, may we suggest shopping in your favorite panda emporiums, Pandyland or our book page? Pandas are standing by to take your calls.

Until tomorrow, Panda On!

Fabulous Furry Friday

Not only is it Day 2 of 31 Days of Pandas, it is also Fabulous Furry Friday, where we turn on the Panda Way-Back machine, and pull out some of our (okay, MY) favorite ‘toons.

But first, here is another photo from the Travels of Mini Bob!
