It’s Panda Scout cookie time!

I don’t know how Panda Scouts in the Pacific Northwest do it… It’s been raining like crazy, so going door to door to sell cookies or setting up in front of the grocery store is hardly an option….there are even rumors of snow for this weekend.

On my honor, I will try...to eat as many cookies as I possibly can....

On my honor, I will try…to eat as many cookies as I possibly can….

On the other hand, there may not be so many cookies left to sell, so maybe it’s not a problem.

And as we mentioned on Wednesday, It’s almost time for The Academy Awards Ceremony. Here is one of my favorites for an encore presentation.

What will Christopher Robin say about this?

Today is the last day, in fact we are in the last few hours of my Kickstarter campaign to fund Pandamorphosis. Hope you’ve had a chance to stop by and see what else comes out of my studio. (panda-wise, that is). You have until 1 PM PST to join in the fun.

Thank you all so much for your participation, in bringing Pandamorphosis to life!

As we move into Academy Awards weekend…

…it’s time to revisit this year’s Pandy Awards!

Mr. Wu still has not gotten over the existence of his new girl cousins, let alone that he was not chosen as cubby of the year. (We tried to explain that he wasn’t BORN in 2013, but he was not having any of that.)  Maybe when his book comes out, he will feel a little bit better. (More on The Book of Wu next week!)

Those girls are a force to be reckoned with.

And I’m sure you are happy to hear that my Kickstarter campaign for Pandamorphosis is coming to an end, but I have to tell you one more time, that it’s coming to an end! I hope you will consider supporting it, even for a dollar! Yes, you can do that.  Here’s one more image from the book to enjoy.

The Panda Kindergarten is very talented….

Once again, our newest panda kindergarteners take to the stage to show you just how talented they are.

Fresh from their victory in the Giant Panda Zoo Awards, the Cub-lanta twins, Bert and Ernie, share the stage with (well, as much as she’ll let them) none other than Princess Pinky!

we are friendly, not ambitious!

Meanwhile, over in Kickstarter land, Pandamorphosis is still going strong. As we move into the final 4 and a half days, you still have time to pledge your support to bring this project to it’s triumphant close.  Huzzah!

Fabulous Furry Friday ‘bears’ tribute…

…to some of my guiding lights of writing and illustrating for children.

You know how sometimes someone plants a little seed of an idea in your head, and for a while you don’t notice that it’s growing. Say for maybe, for example, 20 years or so, and then one day, it just springs forth with a great big duh!?

My friend, writer and teacher, Deb Lund and her husband Karl Olsen used to house sit for my landlords, when Deb and Karl first moved to Whidbey Island. I got to know them and they came to know and admire my artwork.  One day Deb said, “You know, you would be really good at illustrating children’s books.”  I said something like, “yeah, yeah, in my spare time,” because I was kind of on a fine art mission, and I didn’t want to get distracted.

So, fast forward 20 years and one day, after I had been panda-ing around with my cartoons for a year or so, it popped into my head that It.  Was.  Time, and so I called Deb up and said, “It’s time!!! NOW what do I do????” Deb pointed me in the direction of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)  and I went to a conference, started paying attention, took a class with Deb, and soon Pandamorphosis started on it’s long journey.

pandamorphosis illustration

Don’t you just hate it when your refrigerator is infested by…pandas? Especially when you need a snack for a long journey!

There are some other big influences in my trip to writing and illustrating for children, but they are people I have never met.  (OK, one of them signed the book I bought, but that doesn’t really count.)  The author/illustrators I consider to be my primary guiding lights are Chris Van Allsburg, and David Wiesner. They create art and stories that inspire me.  The paintings they create for their books are brilliant in their own right, and when put in service of whatever tale they are telling, pure magic happens.

When I was making the rounds of publishers and agents with Pandamorphosis, one agent who turned me down commented, “don’t you think the artwork is too good for children’s books?

‘Scuse me?
I don’t think that’s possible.

So I will try, to do my duty, to art and illustration, to aspire to the quality of art and the rich and quirky story telling, of my heroes.

And here is a Fabulous Furry Friday Funny, cause, like, I did NOT forget!

And just how did the panda kindergarten get her address?

And now from our bears on the spot at the Winter Olympics

Wow, It has been wild around here this week.  We are having a great response Pandamorphosis has been getting over at Kickstarter, and then all day yesterday, I thought the power was going to go out, because there was so much wind and rain.

But the show must go on, as they say, and the Pandalympics are no exception.  Here we have the latest Olympic sport for the Panda Kindergarten!

hey, are dere any more cuppycakes?

And don’t forget, there are just 10 more days to have your purchases of all three Panda Chronicles books over on Amazon help to support Pandas International in their work with pandas.  For each panda Chronicle book that is bought this month, I will donate $1 to Pandas International. Come’on. Be the bear.

It’s Fabulous Furry Friday, tra la, tra la!

Although I miss those elevated readership numbers that come with posting a new cartoon every day, (and didn’t I do a fabulous job with that?  pats self on back) It is good that I can get to some other projects that have been in the works for a while.  If you subscribe to my newsletter, you’ll know what they are.  If you don’t…well, you’ll find out eventually!

In the meantime, here are some encore presentations from the archives to get you in the mood for the weekend!

Princess Pinky returns on Sunday in a new cartoon! Huzzah!!!!!!! (And…um…she might have found mommee’s hiding place for her magical wand!)

I resolve not to make any resolutions….

…although it MIGHT be a good idea for the panda kindergarten to resolve a few things, and then the there’s Princess Pinky….how do you solve a problem like a princess?

Hey! here I am on Sunday afternoon, working on my new schedule, which is to bring you the Monday cartoon on Sunday! Huzzah!  Of course, if you don’t check in until Monday, well, the pandas will be here waiting for you.  Mr. Wu Wednesday will continue, although he doesn’t have any adventures planned for a while. I think maybe he should stay home for a little bit, don’t you?

Speaking of planning (who was speaking of planning?….Oh wait, it was me!) If you want to be the first to hear about what I have planned for the next year, you still have time to sign up for my once-in-a-while newsletter.  (I’m sending it out on Tuesday morning) This month, not only is it chock-a-block full of news, I also have prepared a PDF of the entire Wizard of Wu adventure story.  Huzzah!  Buuuuut, the only way you’ll get it is to sign up for my newsletter. It’s the second from the top sign up form on the right hand column, just under the sign-up to get these posts delivered to your inbox.

And now, bring on the bears!

Princess Pinky helps with new years resolutions

You say you want a resolution, well, you know, it is hard to change a bear….

Day 31: It’s a WUnderful Life – Episode Nine

Oh my! It is not only the last episode of Mr Wu’s most recent adventure, but it is the last day of the year, and even more importantly, the last day of 2013’s 31 Days of Pandas!!!!! Huzzah.  Well, not Huzzah! that daily pandas are coming to an end, but Huzzah! that I managed not to miss a single day of NEW cartoons, every stinkin’ day!

Huzzah! Here are some 31 Days of Pandas statistics that I find interesting in my own pandy little way: There are 245 (plus or minus a panda here and there) drawings of pandas within these 31+ drawings. That is more than an 800% increase over the original year of 30 days of pandas.  (someone might want to check my math on that one.)  There was an average of over 1500 page views per week during the month. Huzzah!  I know that’s not quite the big leagues, but it sure beats the heck out of the early days when 10 views was a really big day for the pandas.

There is much panda-ing in store for 2014. Pandas kept me going through 2013, which quite frankly, felt like a year long Friday the 13th, if you want to know the truth. But enough about that! Let’s have the final episode of It’s a WUnderful Life!

It's a Wonderful Life, parody

Yay! The heartwarming schmoopy ending!

And here’s a little bonus, especially for those of you who have joined the panda fun here at The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire recently: The Panda Kindergarten’s New Year’s Eve!

See ya next year!

Day 30: It’s a WUnderful Life, Episode Eight…

And here is the episode you’ve been waiting for, enlightenment and redemption (and cuppycakes) are sure to follow.

And now, episode eight of It’s a WUnderful Life:

It's a Wonderful Life, parody

Everytime a bell rings, a panda gets a cuppycake.

Tune in tomorrow for the dramatic conclusion! Huzzah!

And a big pandy thank you to Vicky Vladic for her line: Every time a bell rings, a panda gets a cuppycake.

Day 25: It’s a WUnderful Life, part 3

I know in the original movie, all the action takes place on Christmas Eve, but frankly, I just can’t draw that fast. So BEAR with me, ‘kay? (I should probably make some kind of new year’s resolution about giving up making terrible puns, but you know, it’s just not gonna happen. Let’s all just move on.)

So, while all the pandas in real life are now partying at mama Bai Yun’s place, in pandyland, it’s time for episode 3 of It’s a WUnderful Life! Huzzah!

It's a wonderful Life parody

Bee the bear tells it like it is: every panda matters.

I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore…oh wait…sorry, that was the last adventure!

There’s more coming your way tomorrow! Merry Christmas to all!

Have yourself a pandy little Christmas....
