Six More Weeks of Procrastination!

Yes, once again, it’s Groundhog’s Day and we have another visit from Punxsutawney Phil. I’m pretty sure I misspelled Punxsutawney in my ‘toon, but there is only so much room and just maybe it is a DIFFERENT Phil from a DIFFERENT small town in Pennsylvania. As luck would have it, Eastern PA is currently being buried under a s**t pile of snow, so I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Phil will think we are going to have six more weeks of winter, whether he sees his shadow or not.

Here, for your enjoyment, are several haikus extolling the joys of winter:

Still sleeting out there
Maybe it will never stop
It will always sleet

A half inch of sleet
Will make my shoveling harder
F**k this stupid storm

On further review
It is also still sleeting
WTF weather?

Thanks to our guest poet, who did not give me permission to share her poems. 🙄 Thanks Cami!

And now, Live on ZooNooZ, our interview with Punxsutawney Phil!

Punxatawny, Punxsutawney…what’s a few letters between friends?

In case you missed Phil’s visit last year…

Phil is kind of excitable, isn’t he?

Sunday with Frank and Mikey

No, they are not pandas (not even the brown ones) but Frank and Mikey have become real favorites around here. Ever since their original appearance in 2018 for the Bart Kravenclaw hearings, they keep popping up in the oddest places!

As I put ‘toons in logical (for me) order for the upcoming books, I was surprised and pleased to see how many times they popped up. and now they have featured (some might say starring) roles in a Panda Chronicles classic, Beary Poppins!

Here’s some of my favorites!

Send in the bears!

Helloooooo bears!

I like bears.

“We are NEVER going to get our security deposit back!!!”

Ruh Roh….

Frank and Mikey are just right!

Be a wild thing!

Wild thing, I think I love you!

The Year in Review!

I have not done a Year in Review post yet, and as such, I think I’ll do it now! You’ll be happy to know that I am finally spring into action (when I am not stress napping or having weird dreams about not being able to write my name on a piece of paper) and gathering my ‘toons and organizing them to do not one, but TWO books! Having flaked out on creating any new books for the last 3 years, I have enough ‘toons to make two bigger than normal books.

I decided that one of them will be mostly political ‘toons, and while the other is not entirely devoid of politics (because 2016-2020), it leans more toward panda-ish subjects and will contain all the longer stories I wrote in the last several years.

But now! On with the Year in Review!!!

January

The year started off with impeachment and plenty of hypocrisy to go around!

February

ZooNooZ continues to get all the top notch interviews! Look out Rachel Maddow!

March

Meet Ruth Panda Ginsbear, who joined the rest of the felty pandas!

The Notorious RPG

April

The pandemic lockdown begins…a few months too late.

May

Pinky does her part to help supply masks for everyone. SOMEBODY has to be the boss!

June

With the country in lockdown (well, parts of it anyway) wild animals return in force to the National Parks!

July

When you can’t make fun of politics via panda satire, the terrorists have won. We try to do our part!

August

In August, a dear friend of pandas passed away unexpectedly. She loved pandas and NASCAR, so this was the first in a 3 part tribute to her memory. We sure miss you over at Twitter, Jayelle.

September

Frank and Mikey got their own talk show in 2020!

October

With a new baby cubby at the Panda House, Mei decided to hire a nanny! Welcome to Beary Poppins!

November

Bikkie has a name and gets his outfit!

December

uh oh. Generally speaking, grizzly bears do not make good nannies.

Well, that was our year in review! If you want to read the entirety of each story, just look for the archive tab on the right side of the home page so you can read the entire story! (Or you can wait and buy the books!)

A New Day Has Dawned

Morning has broken.
T*ump has left the building

WE HAVE A PRESIDENT (No * or ” ” needed!)

You may or may not have voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, but they are our new President and Vice President. I think they are people of integrity, that they will work hard to fix the things T*ump broke, and things that were broken before he got there. They will not be successful with everything, but they will give it their best effort.

Many of us (like me) will be traumatized for a while. We came so close to losing our democracy and I am really glad that we didn’t! President Biden has put some really smart and dedicated people in charge of getting the pandemic under control, and while we have some hard times ahed, I believe that they will be able to get it under control if we all do our part.

Meanwhile, we can say a not very fond “Buh BYE” to the  man who would have liked to be king…

Mittens has left the building.

For those who are interested, my felty Fight Bunny has been claimed, but their project has a bit more to go before the reach their funding goal. Check out The Effervescent Adventures of Fight Bunny and make a pledge, for a book (digital or otherwise) and mebbee a Fight Bunny pin!

While you were waiting for whatever was going to happen next week…

Well, here we are, waiting for the other shoe to drop, hoping against hope that all will be well, or at least well as to the successful completion of President Biden and Vice President Harris’ inauguration.

I thought I might take this opportunity to thank you all once again, for these last 11 years of Fun with Pandas. I decided not to do a January Kickstarter project, as right now I don’t seem to have the required energy. However, a project came across my Twitter feed that I thought some of you might be interested in.

I follow a lot of other writers, cartoonists and illustrators on Twidder, and Jennifer L Meyer is one of my favorites because BUNNIES!!! I love her drawing style. She has teamed up with Nate Cosby and Ariana Maher to create The Effervescent Adventures of Fight Bunny.

Because I can’t leave well enough alone, and because I like supporting other artists when I can, I made them an offer I was pretty sure they couldn’t refuse. If you’ve been following along here, you can probably guess what it is, so you might want to head over there first thing Monday morning to check it out. At the very least, you might decide that your home library won’t be complete without your own copy of The Effervescent Adventures of Fight Bunny

Because BUNNIES!!!!

Here are some of my ‘toons about doing Kickstarter campaigns!

and that’s what it’s all about!

A Mighty Wind Was Blown’…

Besides the mighty (foul) wind that blew through DC last week, a mighty wind blew through the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday night, which knocked the power out to the entire island. We got reports that we would not have power back till Saturday, which, as you can imagine, was not happy news. BUT!!!! Unexpectedly the power came back around noon today, which meant I could get today’s ‘toon scanned (finally!)

But here we are now!

You knew I was going to have to comment on this.

If we don’t stand for justice, we stand for nothing.

Buckle up people. I don’t think we have reached safe harbor yet.

Be kind,
Be resolute

In my lifetime…

More thoughts on where we are….

In my lifetime, I never thought I’d see an armed attempt at a takeover in our nation’s Capitol. I never thought I would see elected representatives in the government excusing an outgoing “president’s” attempt to stay in power at any cost. That no members on Congress died is a small miracle. But still 5 lives were lost, one a member of the Capitol Police force defending the Congress.

When HWMNBN first announced his candidacy 6 years earlier, using racist, authoritarian language, I wanted to believe what he said would immediately disqualify him. I wanted to believe he had no chance of winning the nomination over far more seasoned Republicans.

But on that day, a small, smoldering fire of apprehension started within me.

I wanted to believe he could not get nominated but he did. I wanted to believe he could not be elected, but he was.

At every step, he crossed another line. At every outrage, every attack on democracy and human decency, people in power let it go. “Let him have this small victory. What harm could it do to humor him?” But like a wildfire that grows exponentially each minute you fail to put out the flames, he grew larger and more difficult to contain.

There is not enough space here to list all of his outrages. Other people have done it far better than I could. (See Amy Siskind’s The Weekly List or Heather Cox Richardson’s interview with Bill Moyer)  But in the last seven days, he has both made a phone call to the GA Secretary of State which could certainly be considered extortion, and incited an armed assault on the Capitol where the entire Congress and the Vice President were convened to certify the vote of the Electoral College. Actually, those 2 events took place within 4 days.

We are seeing history in the making and quite frankly, I’m not sure how this is going to turn out.

It depends on how deep the rot goes, I guess. I believe in the goodness and dedication and competence of our incoming president Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris. They are already compiling their team of experienced, competent, dedicated cabinet and staff. If they are not prevented from taking office, I believe with a lot of hard work, they can turn things around and get the country working again.

The death toll from COVID19 is about to reach 400,000. That is more than the population of all Whidbey Island and the San Juans. Barely a year ago, HWMNBN was impeached for the first time, and when COVID19 reared it’s ugly head.

There can be no healing without accountability. Those who knew better, who amplified the Big Lie about the outcome of this election must be called to account. Whether he is removed by the 25th Amendment, Impeachment, or resignation, The Big Liar must go. 10 days IS too long to leave him with the means for more destruction.

I was in college when Richard Nixon resigned. It was a little scary and a little thrilling. I watched it on television. This week, where we don’t know if there will be the will to demand accountability, is far more terrifying.

Love to you all.

Can’t ghosts have opinions too?

“And they called ME a crook!”

If Pinky wins the 2020 election, can we have panda-gate?

Um…

All together now!

“crime” is not a verb

Won’t he just go away?

You Say You Want a Resolution…

Since we might want something to distract us from both today’s vote in Georgia, AND the cluster**k that is about to occur in Congress tomorrow, I thought it would be a good time for Mommee Mei to deliver Pinky’s resolutions for the year!

And let’s not even get into the phone call Mittens made to Georgia’s Secretary of State…really, let’s not get into it!

Frank and Mikey are taking a quick pre-hibernation nap in their room as Pinky, Bubba, Ping, and Bikkie discuss the upcoming presentation of Pinky’s New Year’s resolutions!

Let’s see what’s happening, shall we?

It was either this or a double semi-tractor trailer!

31 Days of Pandas: Day 23!

Oh my! We are galloping downhill to the end of 31 Days of Pandas! It is a fun opportunity to revisit old ‘toons, while adding to the repertoire of new stories with Beary Poppins! I plan to finish up Beary Poppins’ story by years end. Because it has been a bit drawn out, starting on Friday, I will start from the beginning of Beary Poppins and recap all the episodes over the next few days, so if you’ve missed any, you can get caught up before the dramatic finale!

Wait…there’s going to be a dramatic finale?

But now…let’s get our snacks so we can enjoy the finale of Pinky in Wonderland!

The whole truth and nothing but, so help me, Pinky!

Mebbee just a liddle bite of da magical mushroom….

Oh oh! What is happening! The room is spinning and it’s all going dark!

Was it all just a dream?

Mebbee Bubba isn’t going to let Pinky push him around anymore. Yeah. Right.

We hope you enjoyed this encore presentation of Pinky in Wonderland! Be sure to ‘toon in tomorrow for the next episode of Beary Poppins! I’m sure it will lift your spirits!

31 Days of Pandas: Day 16

More from Pinky in Wonderland today!

But first, a little Christmas song for your singing pleasure!

You better watch out
You better beware,
They smell kinda bad and
They’ve got lots of hair,

Grizzly bears are coming to town…

They’re making a list
They’re looking for food,
They’re not very nice,
They’re grumpy and rude,

Grizzly bears are coming to town!

They see you when you’re sleeping,
They’re right outside your tent,
And if you smell like dinner
It’s better if you went..

So ring out your bells,
Spray out some stuff
Run really fast,
And hope it’s enough,

Grizzly bears are coming to town!!!

And now, more of our encore presentation of Pinky in Wonderland!

Did you miss the first episodes of Pinky in Wonderland? Find them HERE!

Drink mee!

Well dis is a pickle an’ a half!

It would be better with a little salt and balsamic vinegar, but not bad!

We know just how you feel, Pinky. We feel the same.

That’s all for now! ‘Toon in tomorrow for more from Beary Poppins!

We’re almost there!
