Bob has a Dilemma

It’s not fair …the cry of Nihilists everywhere, is being heard in the halls of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire, as Bob wanders around, telling anyone who will listen to him, about how he has been replaced by Mr. Wu (Mr. Wu!!!) as co-host for ZooNooz’s flagship news broadcast.

It’s just not fair!

Editor’s note: Late breaking news!!!! We have just learned that Princess Pinky has gotten herself onto the news show, 60 Minutes. Where will all this unfair, free publicity end? We just don’t know!

What to do, what to do….this is a dilemma, no mistake about that!

Perhaps the Meihems can help...

Perhaps the Meihems can help…

Meanwhile, Pinky is still hacking into my computer, but I may have figured out a way to de-Pinky it. Stay tuned!

The light bulb thing still works, doesn’t it? I look very presidential here, don’t you think?

Be the Bear,
Bob T. Panda

BTW: We would be very remiss if we did not mention that it is Mama Mei Xiang’s 17th birthday! Huzzah! Now Pinky, could you just be a good little panda for one day and celebrate someone other than Pinky?

*F.F.F. Salute to Meihem!

* Fabulous Furry Friday is proud to present our…

Salute to Meihem!!!!!!

Yes, the darling duo turns TWO this weeK, and all things Pinky aside, we are delighted to celebrate the Meihem’s big week! (For those of you who are new to panda watching, the Meihems are the twin cubs of Lun Lun and Yang Yang of the Cublanta Zoo …um I meant Zoo Atlanta…deep in the southern belle state of Georgia.

I remember the day they were born. I was watching the Zoo Atlanta panda cam and Lun Lun was in the den, and wouldn’t you know it a little cub just slid out. of…you know…the cub slidey place, and then not even a half hour later, here comes ANOTHER one! I immediately called one of the panda faithful, knowing she would be watching as well, and we yelled into our phones and jumped around our respective kitchens.

What a day!

The first appearance of the twinkies on The Panda Chronicles

We started off calling them The Twinkies, but when they got their real names at 100 days, Mei Lun and Mei Huan, we began to call them the Meihems, because when you have more than one panda cub, you are bound to have Meihem!

But of course, Mr Wu had had a whole year of being the center of attention, and he. was. not. pleased at this development.

Mr Wu speaks out!

And then there was the old gender misidentification thing. For the first four months, we thought they were boys…

Well, you didn’t think Pinky would be able to resist showing up in the Meihem’s tribute, did you?

So, once they were determined to be girls, appropriate measures had to be taken!

Be sure to stay tuned to our tribute to Mr. Wu later this month who turns THREE! Oh yeah, and um… someone else’s birthday is coming up in August… can’t quite remember whose…..

Fabulous Furry Friday

It’s hard to believe that 2015 is almost halfway over. Where does the time go? Any day now, the panda progeny season may begin. We are hopeful that there might be two new panda cubbies in the US, although we are hoping for a trifecta, which has not happened yet. Ms Lun Lun of Atlanta has not revealed whether she is interested in completing the triple crown of panda-dom, but we are ever hopeful!

We had no new panda cubs in the US last year, but in 2013, we celebrated the birth of the Meihems and…ahem…Princess Pinky, America’s sweetheart (“and icon! don’t forget I am a icon!!!!!”).

I think this would be an excellent opportunity for Fabulous Furry Friday to look back on the birth of our about to be two year-old reigning panda princesses, don’t you?

Mr Wu speaks out!

A look-back at the birth of the meihem twinkies would not be complete without Mr. Wu’s commentary.

Sweet dreams, little bears! This cartoon was written before…um…Pinky poofed the twins into girls.

And just how did the panda kindergarten get her address?

Such a little darling! How could her big brother resist spoiling her?

When Pinky got her first tutu…

Tune in again next week, for more from the childhood of the Meihems and Princess Pinky!

It’s Official! Pinky is More Popular Than…

We now have absolute proof that Pinky is more popular than…

Any. Other. Animal. At. The. Smithsonian. Zoo. I bet you thought I was going to quote John Lennon.

At least any that have their own animal cam. The elephants were the closest contenders, with over 600,000 views. Pah! Chicken feed!!!! Do you want to guess how many views the panda cam had in 2014? Oh…you already looked. Well, if you were waiting for me to tell you, the panda cam had in excess of 38,000,000 views. Rumor has it, the panda cam takes more than 60% of the zoo’s bandwidth (whatever that is). Well… do you really want to watch anyone other than Pinky?

editors note: We just received a clarification from a reader who actually knows this for a fact (because she works for the Smithsonian) that the panda cam actually takes up 60% of the ENTIRE SMITHSONIAN bandwidth (19 museums and 9 research centers), not just the Zoo. Ahem.  Pinky IS an icon. Just sayin’

I thought not.

Proof positive of Pinky's persuasive popularity!

Proof positive of Pinky’s persuasive popularity!

Which leads to me to my other “truth is weirder than fiction but provides great inspiration for panda satire” news story: Pinky Money! Okay, it’s really just a commemorative coin, but a small bear can dream, can’t she? (Note: this is NOT an endorsement for Pinky Money.)

BTW, we apologize for not adding any more of the WeREndangered mug series that we promised. We were “away” (no, not in prison!) for a few weeks and then got sick on our return, so the new mug program is set back a bit. I’m going to get right on it though! Bee the Bear and Mr. Wu are not waiting very patiently, and neither are the Meihems. Stay tuned to the Panda Channel and we will let you know when they are on the shelf.

Money for Pinky!

I know you want to just cut to the chase and go see what Pinky has up her paws to raise money for Pinky and her presidential campaign, but just bear with me a minute.

Oh. You can’t wait…read a few of my thoughts, it’s just but what is Pinky up to NOW, you want to know!

Oh, all right. Go ahead a look. I’ll be right here.

Are you back?
Good.
So I was listening the National Panda Radio the other day, and I heard a story about how paper is making a comeback. And it’s not just about books. There are recent studies that suggest that students retain more relevant information by writing, rather than typing on a laptop or tablet. Artist and writer Lynda Barry (now Dr. Lynda, thanks to a honorary doctorate from my alma mater The University of the Arts in Philadelphia) suggests that ideas and memories can be triggered and stimulated by the actual act of putting pencil to paper.

This is encouraging and validating for a luddite such as myself, who refuses to get a Waccom tablet to draw and paint digitally, and insists on drawing with pencil and india ink with a dip pen (a dip pen, for crying out loud!!!!) to bring you all the panda satire you can stand. Many is the day when  I started a cartoon without an idea, but I would draw a nose, and then some ears, and before I knew it, pandas were doing stuff and it was funny!

Okay… Well, I thought it was funny.

Just in case you were wondering how Pinky came up with the idea to do this:

I really had no idea what she was up to.

I really had no idea what she was up to.

I’m sure there will be some consequences both for Pinky and myself.
See you next time!

Fabulous Furry Friday Salutes…

…Easter! Bring on the marshmallow peeps, the malted milk candy covered Easter eggs, the chocolate pandas and…what…wait…

What do you mean there are no chocolate pandas for my Easter basket. Only BUNNIES????? I thought Easter was all about pandas! and how the Easter Panda brings treats to all the good little girls and boys….

What's Black and White and carries cuppycakes in a basket?

Of course, once certain members of the panda kindergarten came on the scene, the tradition became more of …um…a trick or treat kind of experience.

Once again, Fabulous Furry Friday brings you the REAL story!

Grounded for Life

Those panda moms are some tough cookies. You do NOT want to
Make
them
MAD!

You might just find yourself grounded for life.

Good thing Pinky has her own computer in her room and a Skype account so she can keep in touch with her American Zoo panda compatriots.

But maybe you should be careful what you admit to, Pinky.

But maybe you should be careful what you admit to, Pinky.

Hopefully Larry will start advising her to be a better behaved little panda soon.

Fabulous Furry Friday…again!

I am very sorry to tell you of a great tragedy.

Yes, that’s right. Panda Scout cookie Season is over. But it’s not too late for Fabulous Furry Friday to salute the Panda Scout Cookie Drive!

On my honor, I will try...to eat as many cookies as I possibly can....

On my honor, I will try…to eat as many cookies as I possibly can….

As you may recall, the Meihem twins are Panda Scouts and have earned many merit badges for such diverse skills as cookie wrangling, sibling rivalry, and hostage taking.

I love a good art forgery, don't you?

What do you mean “hostage taking” doesn’t have a merit badge? They were very polite.

And who could forget the great Highway Gate incident, when …um…”someone” disrupted traffic to Zoo Cublanta, thus spoiling the sale of the Meihem’s Panda Scout cookies?

Time to call in …Inspector panda!

Don’t you wish you could read the entire Highway-gate Story? You Do? Well, you might consider getting your very own copy of The Panda Chronicles Book 5: Pandapocalypse NOW! which has this whole story and a whole lot more Pinki-tude and Meihem, for your chortling pleasure. Wasn’t that a subtle commercial? I thought so too.

Have a great weekend!

Even more journalistic follies

If there is one thing we just cannot abide (the Dude, notwithstanding) it is people or …um…pandas, getting credit for something they did not do. But that is just what is going on here at Zoonooz headquarters. Some one is going to have to put a stop to these journalistic follies!

And then there is accidentally confessing to something you did do, but hoping that no one will believe you.

We KNEW that was you!

We KNEW that was you!

Is there more Meihem ahead?

What do you think?

Meanwhile, the panda season of looooove is heating up! More from the PSofL soon! And don’t forget! Today is the Ides of March. We don’t know what that is, but it sounds scary. Beware!
