Day 9: 31 Days of Pandas

31 Days of Pandas and Fabulous Furry Friday are here to spread a little holiday cheer, during what has proved to be an otherwise grim end to the year. (There are those opinion thingies again!) Anywho, what better time of year than to rerun one of our holiday classics, It’s a Wunderful Life, starring, of course, Mr. Wu! Plus to start, one of my favorite ‘toons, wherein, Mehitabel makes a gingerbread house for a local competition, which is…um…modified by the panda kindergarten! Huzzah!

And of course, we start with today’s #TravelsofMiniBob*

*editor’s note: Yesterday, I had to rotate the picture from my mePhone so that it would appear in the right direction, and while it appears correctly on the website on the computer, it appears sideways on both my iPand and in the email. I don’t know how to fix that, so I won’t.

Mini Bob at the Marianne North House at Kew Gardens

This is one of my favorite things about Kew: The Marianne North House. North was a Victorian era woman, of considerable means. Her father died when she was still a relatively young woman, so she took her fortunes and her interest in painting and traveled all over the world, painting landscapes and botanical studies. She bequeathed her entire collection, as well as the funds to build this little cottage, to Kew Gardens. As you can see, her paintings are installed cheek by jowl, floor to ceiling. Some are even on the ceiling. It is a magical place, and if you are ever in London, you should go there immediately. The gardens are pretty nice too, but watch out for the goose poo in some areas.

A Halloween Carol part 2

OOO! Here we are all again, ready for the exciting conclusion of the seasonal classic (I told you it was going to be, didn’t I?) A Halloween Carol part the second! Huzzah! Join Pinky, Bubba, Wu and the Meihems as they teach (well, try to, anyway) Pinky that it’s not all about her!

One of Pinky’s misdeeds has come back to haunt her… can her campaign survive this?

Hmmm… Pinky still does not seem impressed. Perhaps the ghost of Halloween present will have more influence over her.

Uh oh, the ghost of halloween present just caught up with Pinky…

Was that list in small type, single spaced?

The Spirit of Halloweens yet to come is not a spirit to be messed with, right? Actually, this prediction turned out to be very accurate.

Surely you didn’t think she would totally reform, did you?

A Halloween Carol Part 1

Last year, when Bubba was but a tiny tyke, I did a parody of the Dicken’s classic A Christmas Carol, starring Pinky, in the hopes that it would make her a kinder older sister. Did it work? You be the judge. Maybe this will become a Halloween classic!

Fabulous Furry Friday… Arrr!

There are TWO important “days” coming up. No, it’s not Pinky’s birthday again, or even mine for that matter. Saturday, September 17th is International Red Panda Day, and Monday, September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrr! In honor of these days, Fabulous Furry Friday brings you encore presentation ‘toons of Red Pandas and Pirate adventures! Huzzah! I mean… Arrr!

And every day around here is Talk Like a Panda Day!

Remembering

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. And with apologies to Charles Dickens, we seem to be living those times again. It is a day for remembering the events of 15 years ago, and a day for remembering that good things happened as well, on this day of sadness and terror brought home. Happy birthday Cami. Sorry this day will forever be wrapped in sadness. We can only go forward from here, and hope that enough people remember that they could embrace what is good instead of building walls against what is bad, because that really doesn’t work, now, does it?.

And of course, pandas have a lot to say about this.

Today is a good day to be the bear.

And a note about Wednesday’s post; we have invited a special guest to join us here at The Panda Chronicles! Our friend Hazel Mitchell, who we met at the Nevada SCBWI Mentor program last year, has a new book out this week about a special furry friend of hers. Pinky has agreed to interview Toby, which, frankly, I don’t know how this is going to work. Pinky PROMISED she would be nice to Toby, but “Pinky-Nice” may not exactly be anyone else’s definition of “nice”. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope for the best! Pinky Promise my eye!

Someone is having a Birthday Soon

Here at the Panda Chronicles headquarters, we take panda birthday season very seriously! And since Pinky’s (“and bubba’s!!!!!”) Birthday is just around the corner, we thought we would have a little Pinky-fest! Oh, what a surprise! A whole bunch of ‘toons all about Pinky!

Let the Pinky Fest begin!!!!!

Such a little darling! How could her big brother resist spoiling her?

Phexit – Brexit – what’s the difference? Well, at least at first glance, Brexit did not involve pandas, although……if Scotland proceeds with its intention to consider another vote for independence, England would have no easy access to pandas, as in the Scottish pandas in Edinburgh!!!!

Dis will not stand!

But…ahem…anyway, after setting up last week’s Friday post, I realized I had missed an opportunity to celebrate the Wu Self right on his actual birthday!!!!! Fortunately, according to the International Birthday Season codes and standards, today could STILL be considered Wu’s birthday season, (depending on how you interpret the rules) so along with today’s feature brand new ‘toon, allow me to rectify my grievous omission and add a few classic Wu-toons into today’s post.

Meanwhile, it is not enough that Pinky has pitched a hissy fit over the alleged slight from the Meihems, vis-a-vis their party invitation or lack thereof, but now, she has yet another sinister web with which she tries to ensnare Bubba. Has this panda no boundaries?

Pinky, do you really think that Bubba will fall for this?

And while Bubba is beginning to be a little wary of Pinky’s plans (especially when they concern him or Banky Pig) he is impressed by her clever bending of the societal rules.

And now, for a rousing 4th Birthday tribute to the Wu Self!

It’s Time to Party Like a Panda!!!!

Oh my, it is the birthday celebration for Atlanta’s favorite sweethearts, the Meihem sisters, as they turn three years old! I still remember the morning the twins were born. I was…um… checking in on Facebook, because the panda keepers at Zoo Atlanta were pretty sure that mama Lun Lun was pregnant, but they had NO idea it was twins!*

Along with thousands of other panda fanatics, I was glued to the internet, awaiting the entrance of another baby panda to the world, when a cub came shooting out into the universe. (They do seem to come out at great speed). Lun Lun lept into mom mode, but turns out she wasn’t done yet. Less than a half hour later, another cub came rushing out and then we had what you might call a situation.

I did what any other right thinking panda fan would do, under those circumstances. I called another panda fan (Cyndi A) and we danced around our respective kitchens screaming like a girl.

So without further ado, I now present some of my favorite cartoon moments with the Meihems, starting with the Wu Self’s reaction to the news!

Of course all the other panda moms were on the phone to Lun Lun to congratulate her…

When the twins were born, everyone thought that they were boys, along with their sibling Po. Boy did we all have a surprise coming!

Oh…yeah…how could we forget Pinky?

But after we found out that the Meihems were girls, they promptly joined the Panda Scouts and went to work selling cookies! Binky Bars, anyone? But of course, Pinky threw a ~~monkey~~ panda wrench into the works…

Time to call in …Inspector panda!

But in the end, all was well that ended well, after a whole bunch more stuff happened, (which, if you had Book 5 of the Panda Chronicles, Pandapocalypse Now! you would know what happened!) and now, it’s time for some cake!!!!

There must be cake!

Baby Panda Season

What better distraction is there to world events, the 2016 presidential election, and the lack of cake at my house, than BABY PANDA SEASON ??????? Pandas are popping out all over, and while we wait to see if Lun Lun (mom of the Meihems) or Lady MacBear of Edinburgh are going to gift us with bouncing baby pandas, we must be satisfied with reports and pictures of panda kiddies in China and Belgium.

So to celebrate Baby Panda Season, we here at The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire and Fabulous Furry Friday bring you some of our favorite cartoons about….baby pandas! (What? you thought it was going to be about the gross national product forecasts or the effect on global economies if Britain leaves the EU?)

But then we had no new baby pandas till 10 months ago when Pinky’s little brother Bubba arrived…although that event was a mixed blessing…

One of Mei Xiang’s twin cubs did not survive, and Pinky dealt with the loss as only Pinky can…

I love Pinky’s resilience! But we would not be doing our job here if we did not include one of my favorite baby Bubba ‘toons.

What a World We Live In

It’s no wonder some people (such as myself) have a little bit of a hard time separating fact from fiction. As you will see in next week’s ‘toons, when Mittens takes to the stage, there was so much of his dialog that I could pull from actual news items, that I really didn’t have to make much up. In some ways, it makes my life easier, but in other ways… I’d like the world we live in to be kind and fair and…um…have so many pandas that they become a pest: invasive rather than endangered. They could go into neighborhoods where people have foolishly planted bamboo, which has now gotten out of control, and take care of it, providing fertilizer in addition to pesky plant removal. The Putting Pandas to Work program could go global!

Along with all the political news of the week, I’ve also seen a few references to “sock puppet” accounts on various social media outlets. I don’t know what the big deal is. I’ve always loved puppets.

But they’re so cute!

And as various politicians toot their horns about their popularity, as opposed to that of their opponents…

See? I told you it was broken!

(Ha ha! That one has become one of my all time favorites!)

But as we head into the home stretch of this very long campaign season, let me leave you with a ‘toon that reminds us, that the most important positions in the world should not be awarded through stoking the fears of some, but because of what we can bring to a table where there is room for all.
