This ‘toon always deserves a second look!

You better watch out….

Sad.

Sigh…remember when we thought that once Mittens lost, we would be rid of him? This ‘toon was written before the attempted overthrow of the government on January 6th.

It’s time to call it a day, Mittens!

I hope everyone had at least some joy over the recent holidays. It’s been a really hard year for most of us, and very terrible bad year for others. While some of us had the privilege to hide out from the day to day perils and anxieties, others were out on the front line, doing the work that needs to be done.

Many people are saying that The Panda Chronicles helps them get through the insanity that surrounds us, and I am so happy that I can do something useful from my fortress of solitude! I hope that I can keep writing and drawing about my favorite pandas far into the future! Thanks to all of you who cheer me on and find my panda ‘toons funny. Who would have guessed?

Tomorrow we return to The Bears of the Baskervilles. It’s been long enough since the last episode appeared here, that I thought it would be a good idea to start from the beginning. For the next 4 days, I’ll recap the earlier ‘toons, ending with the exciting ending/new ‘toons from the story. Huzzah!!!!

Snow and cold temperatures arrived here last night, so since I am stuck on my snowy hill, I guess I’ll get some work done!

Be the Bear!

On the 10th, 11th, and 12th Day of Crisp-Moss:

Yes,  and technically speaking, 31 Days of Pandas is over, but as I ran out of month before I ran out of verses, (and certain, shall we say, impatient, members of our audience wanted us to just get on with it and post the whole darn thing) we bring you the last three days of Crisp-Moss all at once.

Huzzah!

And now, The Institute of Contemporary Panda Satire presents:
The 12 Days of Crisp-Moss!!!!!

On the twelfth day of Crisp-Moss, My Panda cam Did See....

On the twelfth day of Crisp-Moss, My Panda cam Did See….

Once more with feeling….And a Pinky in a Hemlock Tree!

Everybody sing!

Everybody sing!

Okay, is everyone ready to sing? (and personally, I think that the NZ Panda-Nanny staff would love, love, love it if you serenaded them with this song, tomorrow when you go to visit Pinky and Mum and Dad at the zoo.)

On the Twelth day of Crispmoss, my panda cam did see:

Twelve Pinky Presents,
Eleven Bamboo-tinis,
Ten Pandas Leaping,
Nine Pandarinas,
Eight Santa’s sleigh bears,
Seven pandas chasing,
Six pandas driving,

FII-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-VE CUPPYCAAAAAAAAAAAKES!

Four pandas sneaking,
Three triplets napping,
Two Meihems plotting
and
A Pinky in a Hemlock Treeeeeeeeeeeee!

Huzzah! And because as I type this, it is New Year’s Eve (well, except in the places where it is already the New Year) I leave you with the panda kindergarten, celebrating New Year’s Eve in their own very special way.

Happy New Years, from The Institute of Contemporary Panda Satire!

I can’t tell you enough times or how much it means to me, that you have chosen to be the bears. Thank you all, and the happiest of New Years.

An extra new Year’s Message from The Panda Chronicles…

It has been an amazing year here in pandyland, as I look back on the trials and tribulations, the frolicking and fun, getting to meet some of you in “Tai-land” and looking forward to meeting more of you this spring at the home of Wu, I sit and watch in wonder at it all.

When I started drawing pandas I had no idea where they were going, and no idea that it would continue this long: five years since I started finding pandas on stray pieces of paper in my studio, 4 years since I started the blog, and the last year has accounted for 72% of the traffic here at The Panda Chronicles (thanks to to record keeping software of the folks at WordPress.)  This January also marks another milestone for me…25 years of being totally self employed and supported by my art work.  The last 4 years have not been exactly pain free, economics wise. Some of the galleries where I show my work have closed, some have “reduced their stable,” one just quit paying their artists.(I left that one)  But pandas, while they are not exactly “self-supporting” yet, have lifted my spirits, both as I draw them and more importantly, as you read them.  A work of art, a piece of writing, a foozle* of panda satire, does not really exist until someone other than the person that created it, enjoys it.

Thank you for making my work here live.  You are the bears!

And now, my favorite new year’s eve with the pandy kindy cartoon!

More about studying from the masters….

No, I’m not talking Rembrandt here, although once in a while I channel Carravagio in my compositions.  What I’m talking about are the cartooning greats:  Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, Scott Adams….recently I’ve been devouring Doonesbury by Gary Trudeau and the late, and extremely great Walt Kelly’s Pogo.  “We have met the enemy and he is us.”  Were truer words ever spoken in cartoons, let alone real life?  For some one who is notorious for only looking at the pictures in art books and not reading the text,  I am lovingly absorbing every word in these books, written by and about these cartoonist.  One comment made by Walt Kelly that was reported in the book struck a cord with me.  On being asked about the 500+ named characters, plus hundreds of un-named characters that appeared in his cartoons, he replied, “Well, I just assume that they have jobs in other cartoons when they are not here.”  People sometimes ask where I come up for the ideas for my cartoons.  I can now authoritatively say that my characters are really in charge.  I am just the person holding the pen.
