Don’t forget to tune in on Sunday to see more of Zhennie’s walk on the wild side!!!

It is the birthday season of Bebe Maurice!

We are taking a short break from Pinky in Wonderland (don’t worry! She will be back) to share some ‘toons about OTHER pandas (Pinky: what? there are OTHER pandas? dis can’t be right! plus dere is dat “share” word again! dis will not stand!!!!!!) It is time to celebrate the first birthday of France’s first baby panda, Bebe Maurice! people are saying, “Bebe Maurice needs an outfit! He needs a raison detre’! Or a raisin cookie! Whatebber!”

Here he is, in a three part special presentation!

Of COURSE he would be an artist! But what are the secrets of his maman?

Happy Bearday, Bebe Maurice!

A note about buying my books on Amazon: I was reading a post on the Digital Reader, one of my favorite website/blogs for what’s what in the publishing and tech industries, and Nate wrote an article about used books that are sold by third party sellers via the Amazon website.  For those who are looking for a bargain, buying used books is a great way to add to your TBR pile without breaking the bank. The interesting thing was that some used books were selling for HUGE prices, way beyond the cover price of the book!

So, of course I had to go look…

I don’t make any money when a third party seller sells my book as used. If it is a lesser price, and you trust the seller (Like a friends of the library sale) I say go for it. But I’ve seen used books for sale (mine, I’m talking about) for higher than the cover price of a new book. This is nuts, in my opinion. There was one listed at over $500 (seriously nuts!) If you want to pay that much for one of my books, contact me and I will sell you an extremely overpriced book! (Just kidding. I think)

If you want to support me, buy a new book directly Amazon, so I get paid. I wish they were in independent bookstores so you could support them, but they are not. It would cost me more in time and money to get them there, as an independent publisher, than I would make from them. Hopefully, this will change when my graphic novel and picture books get picked up and published. Pseudo thumbs crossed!

If you want to buy a set of my 8 books, signed, directly from me, we can do that too. And you can always support my work via my Pandreon page! Pandas are standing by!

And in case you didn’t know, it is time for the Tour de France! Just in time for Bebe Maurice’s Bearday! Huzzah!

Didn’t we tell you not to do this?

Pinky in Wonderland Episode 9

After today’s episode, we are going to take a little break from our story (don’t worry! it will be back!) as I have some very impatient pandas who are saying, “but what about US??? Aren’t WEE as important as Pinky?”

I value my life too much to answer that question.

But on with the show. I think we all need to take a deep breath and process what revelations were revealed this week, check our voter registration, and remember what’s important.

Pinky. Pinky is important.

What could be behind that door? Stay tuned, panda fans!

In addition to the fall of western civilization as we have known it, I received news that a dear friend has passed away this week. I met her almost 20 years ago, not long after I started spending time with my friend Mr. Badger.  I hate that this gentle soul is no longer on this earth to remind me of what is important. She’d started having trouble keeping her balance, and soon her mind started to wander off to places we could not follow. I don’t know what comes after death, but I will continue to hope it is something like this:

day

As you know, pandas are big fans of Shakespeare.

The Pandas Debut in Calgary

Yes, Toronto’s loss is Calgary’s gain! The Pandas have packed their toys, driven the U-Haul across the prairies to the north and arrived in the fair city of Calgary! In honor of the debut of ERShun, Da Mao and the kids, Jia Pan Pan and Jia Yue Yue, I thought I’d rerun some of the ‘toons they starred in!

Let’s start at the beginning…

The beginning of Pinky’s campaign to get the Toronto Twins to endorse her presidential campaign, that is!

Bubba: but why should I be in trubble?

I’ll talk! I’ll talk!

Pinky and the Twinkies, eh?

“If Pinky is grounded, can I have her dessert?”

uh oh…

Um…I think Pinky has Daddee wrapped around her fuzzy little paw. Just saying.

Stay tuned next Friday for more stories of the Canadian panda twins (close personal friends of Unka Justin!)

Lunch on the Limpopo part 1

Well, wasn’t that a fun little tale, of KittySue and the Three Pandas? And for those of you who were wondering if maybe you missed an episode between episode 12 and episode unlucky 13 (aka the finale), well, you didn’t. We were employing the time honored dramatic tactic of only implying that violence was going to take place. (In my house, this is usually accomplished by putting a blanket over my head and asking Mr. Badger to tell me when the scary part is over.) But now, we turn to a real life drama that took place in Africa, on the banks of the Limpopo River.

We call this little segment, Lunch on the Limpopo

Limpopo

What goes around, comes around.

Anything to distract us from the fall of civilization as we know knew it.

Being the Bear

In recent years I have maintained a somewhat strict policy as regarding those awards that other bloggers hand out to recognize their compatriots in the bloggosphere. And that policy is this: DON’T DO IT!!!! But recently, someone who obviously did not know this policy gave me one of those darn awards. Being the bear that I am, I’m making an exception on my zero tolerance policy for a special reason. I’ve known Becky, over at Dark Food to Die For, since she was a teenager. I know her sister. I know her parents. I know all their dogs. I know the dogs they had before they had these dogs.

In other words, we have some history, and it’s been a really fun one. Anyone care for some Potato Dilly Bobs? (Okay, that was an inside joke and I’m not going to explain it, but, Kate, if you’re reading this, I hope you didn’t spew coffee all over your phone.)

being the bear

Because, after all, pandas are pretty neat!

The other reason I have decided to accept this award, if maybe not complying with ALL the requirements is this: Becky is smart, talented, and creative. She’s worked hard to perfect several creative careers in a world where the rules of engagement keep changing, and yet she keeps going. Plus she’s cute as a bug, like the rest of the members of her family. So, go check at her blog at Dark Food to Die For. Who knows what you may be inspired to do in your kitchen?

But before I comply with some of the rules, (because pandas are rebels, you know) Here is today’s panda-toon, because I know you are going, okay…can we dispense with the warm fuzzy memories of you and your little friends and get on with some panda satire?????

“Be yourself – Everyone else is already taken”
-Oscar Wilde

The Portrait of Dorian Grey is probably the most parodied trope in literature, probably because it’s so irresistible. My favorite is in The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde, which I have read countless times. Go read it. I’ll still be here.

Okay, so back to this award thingie.
Rule #1: Acknowledge the blogger that inflicted bestowed this award on you. Thanks a bunch Becky…no really! Check!
Rule #2: Answer the 7 questions that they have provided for you: Okay, here goes:

  1. What is the most recent food photo you took with your phone and why? : Um…I don’t do that. I think it’s weird when people do that. So sue me.
  2. Tell me about your most vivid dream.: I had a couple vivid dreams this past week and I am TOTALLY not going to tell you about the first one, but the second one had a tiger roaming my neighborhood and I had to get myself and my cat (the lately departed Mehitabel) into the house, before it ate us. I realized that my phone was in a different house, so I could not call for rescue. I have no idea what this means, but I remembered the tiger when I woke up. Also that the litter box needed cleaning, but there was no way I was going out there with a tiger running loose.
  3. What is your favorite monster movie?: I don’t really have a favorite monster movie, but there were some really scary monsterish villains in Kung Fu Panda 3. does that count?
  4. Tell me about your best summer ever.: Boy, this is kind of a hard one. If I can count the spring that went before it, (and why the heck can’t I?) It would be the year I spent spring semester at the Delaware Water Gap National Park at an independent art program with 8 other students and various visiting faculty. I think that was the experience that solidified my dedication to painting. Second favorite summer was my first time at Jack Beal and Sondra Freckelton’s workshop in Oneonta NY with about 25 other phenomenally talented painters.
  5. If you were trapped on an island for a year and could only have 3 things with you…what would those 3 things be?: Obviously an inexhaustible supply of cuppycakes, a permanently charged iPad, ( with internet connection) and a panda to keep me company.
  6. Quick:  Cats or dogs?  Why?: Aren’t pandas and option? If not, then cats. And if you have to ask why, you don’t know cats very well.
  7. What do you know now as a blogger that you wish you knew when you first started?: Well, I’m not sure what I wish I knew, but I can tell you what really surprised me: that I would make so many genuine connections with people who read my ‘toons, and that some of them have become actual in real life friends. That is completely awesome and amazing.

Pandas are no stranger to winning awards!

So before I get around to naming names, here are my seven questions:

  1. If you could be an animal, which one would you be?
  2. What kind of cuppycake are you, and why?
  3. If you could change any event in the history on people on earth, what would you chose?
  4. What is your favorite city (other than the one you live in) that you have visited?
  5. What children’s book did you read as a child that you still love?
  6. If you knew you only had one year to live, what would you do?
  7. What do you wish you had done in your life that you have not?

So, before I list the blogs that I am saddling with all these things to do bestowing this award and my admiration upon, let me just say that any of these bloggers may not wish to participate in the whole award thingie, and that’s fine by me. I just want to recognize some of the blogs that I read regularly and think that you might enjoy them too.

https://vsomethingspeaks.wordpress.com/ Vicky is a fellow pandaholic that found me through Pandas International. We’ve been working on a project together for a while, and while it is as yet unrealized, I hope it will be published someday.

https://wronghands1.com John Atkinson writes hilarious one panel comics that are smart, funny, with puns that make you groan in admiration. He follow my blog early on, which is how I discovered his comics. I don’t know if he still checks in on the pandas, but I think he’s one of the best cartoonists working today.  He really doesn’t need this award, because he has lots of people following him,  but I just wanted to say, “You’re swell, John!” Plus he’s Canadian and…um…I might need to go there.

http://www.savagechickens.com is another really widely read comic, with chickens, and sometimes cats, doing funny,  snarky things. I love these ‘toons.

http://justoutsidetheboxcartoon.com/apples-and-oranges/ Another last minute I just remembered addition. I knew there was someone else I wanted to include on this post! Good thing I was checking my email! More smart, funny stuff from the land on the other side of the globe!

http://theartofnotgettingpublished.blogspot.com One of the things I love about this blog and blogger, is that like me, she’s one of the no longer a spring chicken who is trying to get traditionally published in the kid-lit arena. I also like that she is smart and funny and…um…politically on the same side of the fence as I am. So sue me. Wait, don’t!  Because she has a responsible grown-up job, she doesn’t always blog on a regular schedule, but I’m always excited to see one of her posts in my email box and always read it.

https://booksaroundthetable.wordpress.com This blog is the forum for five writers and/or illustrators of books for children. It’s always interesting and has shown me some great art as well. Not to mention I learned that I could go see original drawings from Winnie the Pooh at the Victoria and Albert Museum, from a series of posts here.

http://mynameisyeh.com Okay, Molly Yeh definitely does NOT need my endorsement, and with her schedule certainly does not have time to answer my dumb questions. But I have a serious fan girl crush on her and her life, (not in a creepy way, of course) or maybe it’s just all the CAKES she bakes and takes photos of for her blog. I’m not really sure how I first stumbled on her blog, but if you are a fan of food blogs and goshwejusthavesuchafunlifeandlook!here’saCAKE!!! kind of photos, you will fall in love with Molly and her blog. Did I mention CAKE? She also has a new cookbook out, with recipes that I can actually make and also liberal use of the “F” word, which may be a first for any cookbook I have ever seen. And oh yeah, CAKE!!!! You know how pandas feel about cake.

The Four Panda Kindergarteners of the Apandalypse!

Well, I think that’s it for me and this whole award thing. Just don’t do it again.

Day 15: 31 Days of Pandas

It is the Ides of December. Not a good thing in March, and doubly worse in December, as we move towards the Solstice and the darkest day of the year. (One could make the argument that November 8th was the darkest day of…um….the century, but I digress.) But we are just about half-way through 31 Days of Pandas! Tomorrow we will rejoin our holiday classic, It’s a WUnderful Life! Huzzah! But now, we join Mini Bob as he takes a quiet moment to contemplate a card sent by his good friend, the Emperor Pew Panda.

What does that card say, huh, Petit Robear?

pandas

Mini Bob enjoys a quiet moment of reflection.

Hey! Did you know you can buy original cartoons here? if you are looking for a gift for a special someone (like…um…yourself) consider owning an original cartoon, complete with partially unearned pencil lines, and all ink splatters. Any cartoon (not already sold) that has already appeared in one of my Panda Chronicles Books is available for sale, so check your books and find your favorite! Just send me a message via the contact form and we’ll work it out!

Meihems to the Rescue

When you need pandas, you can’t do better than a little bit of Meihem to fix what needs fixing. Needless to say, Pinky is going to need some extra persuasive coaching to be convinced to come out from under the covers. But meanwhile, back at the zoo, there was some real life drama happening. Bubba’s real life counterpart, Bei Bei had to go in for emergency surgery, due to a “lemon size lump of bamboo” plugging up his guts. He is back home and resting quietly (I believe Pinky is reading him her rough draft of her autobiography, in order to lull him to sleep) and I’m sure I will have a ‘toon or two relating to the ordeal, but first, this!

When you need help, best call for MEIHEM!

Meihem

Care for a little Meihem?

And don’t forget to get ready for this years 31 Days of Pandas! We have a special treat, The Travels of Mini-Bob! Get ready to join Mini-Bob as he visits Merry Olde England, and some historic sights (and Pooh Bear!!!!!)

And the Award Goes To…

Sigh…another cycle of the MacArthur Foundation Awards have come and gone, and yet another year when Panda Satire has not been recognized. There is a bright spot, however, even if it did not come to me personally. One award went to Gene Luen Yang, a graphic novelist, who is also the current US Ambassador of Children’s Literature. This is at least the second graphic novelist who has received this award, so I am taking this as an excellent sign that my graphic novel will get published and maybe even sell well. What the heck! Might as well be optimistic about the whole thing, right?

So, once again, here is my annual plea to the MacArthur Foundation to recognize Panda Satire as a worthy recipient of this award!

Why IS there no MacArthur Fellowship for Panda Satire, anyway?

Why IS there no MacArthur Fellowship for Panda Satire, anyway?

And in other news, for the last week, they have been announcing the winners of The Nobel Prize in various categories, with the Nobel Prize for Literature having been announced yesterday. Once again, Panda Satire has been ignored.

But what IS Panda Satire, anyway? We’re glad you asked!

Panda Satire, explained

Panda Satire, explained, not to mention, the first sight of the magical wand, two years before the birth of Pinky.

This just in!!!! The Nobel Prize for Literature goes to: The very Bob Dylan! I have always thought that he was one of the most profound poets to ever strum a guitar, and I couldn’t be happier! (Well, unless they awarded a prize in Panda Satire, but like that’s ever gonna happen.) Huzzah and congratulations to Bob Dylan (aka the other “Bob”) on this well deserved honor.

I just found out that October 1st was 24 hour comic day. Obviously I have been way too busy to find out in good time that this was happening. I will try to do better next year. In the meantime, here are some more panda classics for this Fabulous Furry Friday!

Bear and Breakfast

Pinky has an idea: bear and breakfast !
It is an idea that could make her LOTS of money for her cubpaign.
It is also an idea that could get her into lots of trouble with Mommee and the zoo director.

But when has that ever stopped Pinky?

Aren't you already in enough trouble, Pinky?

Aren’t you already in enough trouble, Pinky?

Meanwhile, the end of summer approaches and Lun Lun is waiting in her den, hopefully cubs are on the way soon! Stay tuned! You’ll know as soon as we do (or maybe even before!) Panda keepers and veterinarians are on the job round the clock now, and with twins, that will go on for some time.
