An Embarrassment of Pandas

Ever since I learned that the collective noun for pandas is “an embarrassment of pandas” I have looked for an excuse to use it here. Of course I learned this on the internet, so, I am not entirely certain that this is correct, but since I couldn’t find anything else* I decided to go with this and hope for the best.

  • I did find the term “a cupboard of pandas”, but since this was in the entirely facetious book, 101 Facts About Pandas, which, among other “facts” classified pandas as a species of walnut, I decided that “cupboard” was probably not correct.

But no matter! One thing that we can be absolutely certain of, is that Pinky will embarrass her mother at any opportunity, especially in public in front of large numbers of people!

It’s My Birthday Too

Well, yesterday was the big party at the National Zoo, with birthday cakes for Pinky and Bubba…um…make that cakes for Pinky and Mei Xiang, since Bubba decided there was way too much hubbub and went back to his den to take a nap and play with some of his presents. We will have a cartoon eventually about the events of the day, but not just yet, because…

Well, just between you and me, Pinky is not such a bad sister after all, because when they went home that night (which was Bubba’s Birthday Eve) we witnessed this scene in Bubba’s room….

Fortunately, Bubba’s nanny keepers didn’t let Mei Xiang eat the entire cake, and they brought it inside so that he could enjoy it in his den. Pinky, of course, had a great time with her cake, which she didn’t have to share with anyone!

While I couldn’t be at the party, I’m having a great time seeing everyone’s pictures and videos!

Now, there is some possibility, as we move into ‘toons about Pinky’s Birthday, that she will behave…um…rather badly. No, no. Keep your faux surprise to yourself. You can’t fool me. I know that you know that Pinky has been known to behave in a way that her mother most definitely does not approve of. And when you add the fact that it is Pinky’s Birthday into the mix, and, that Bubba’s birthday is one day earlier….

Let’s face it. You are asking for trouble…

It’s Going to Get Worse Before it Gets Better

I apologize to you all in advance, in case the current run of ‘toons traumatizes you. But with art as well as in politics, it sometimes gets worse before it gets better. In my work to reintroduce Mittens the Cat (with a whole new fur-do) I am finding that I can’t make up anything more absurd or horrifying than what I hear on the radio or read online.

So in the words of someone or another, sometimes writing satire is just quoting the news. Tom Leher, maybe?

The best of Mittens the Cat! When we found out that Mittens was entering the race for president, we shook our collective heads in dismay. Hasn’t this election cycle gotten crazy enough? Fabulous Furry Friday presents: The Best of Mittens!

Ha ha! Of course it will. One thing we must remember, during this excruciating election season, and that is we need as much funny as possible, and all the better if we can make thinly veiled references (or maybe not so thinly veiled) about various political candidates. And laugh about it. Even if it’s through our grinding teeth.

For those of you who just recently joined the pandasphere, we bring you some cartoons starring Bob and Mittens from the previous presidential cycle. Pinky wasn’t even born yet, let alone vying for world domination!

Today is Earth Day and we almost forgot to celebrate it. Of course, anything with pandas is rather celebratory, so um…have I convinced you of anything yet? Darn… sO let’s just forget all about what we might or might not have forgotten, as Fabulous Furry Friday celebrates Earth Day because….

Trespassers W

One of my favorite books as I was growing up was Winnie the Pooh. (No surprise there, huh?) And although I loved the stories, and still re-read them whenever I need something familiar and comforting to read, what this artist loved best was the drawings. and within those drawings were so many wonderful details that enhanced the story in a way that was not necessarily obvious. It was there for you to find on the many re-readings of this well loved story. And one of my favorite details was the sign outside of Piglet’s house that read, Trespassers W which Piglet claimed was his grandfather, short for Trespassers William.

So along with all the other signs and surveillance paraphernalia that Pinky had installed in “her” tree, is it any wonder that this sign should make it’s way there?

I just listened to an interview with the guy who played the grizzly in the movie The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and ahem…THE BEAR!!!!! Let me say right here that no matter how many well deserved Academy Awards this movie wins this weekend, I have no intention whatsoever of seeing this movie. This guy studied a lot of bear attacks, so he could…um…be the bear.

It was really interesting to hear about all of the preparation and mechanics/ technological magic that went in to making the scenes with the bear attack so realistic. If you’re interested, you might be able to catch the podcast on CBC’s Day Six.

However, I would never dream of boycotting movies containing …pandas. Um…KUNG FU PANDA 3!!! (which I have plans to see tonight!) 

So, in honor of both the bear (yay!!!!!) from The Revenant and the Kung Fu Pandas, here are some being the bear related cartoons for your Fabulous Furry Friday Fun!

Open Late Gate 3

Yes, I had promised to conclude our story about the change in the National Zoo opening times, but several things got in the way, like Bubba’s debut and whoever it was that broke the Cute-o-Meter.

And then there was Snomaggedon 2016 known on twidder as #Snozilla. The video of Tian Tian, the paterfamilias of the National Zoo Panda clan has been going wildly viral on the interwebs, which I know because at least 6 separate people either tagged me in the video or posted it on my FB page. My sympathy goes out to all of you who are stuck at home with nothing to do while the storm rages on outside, and the snow drifts reach your upper story windows, other than watch panda videos, curl up on the couch and read and eat microwave popcorn. You did remember to stock up on that, didn’t you?
