It’s Christmas Eve…Day 24 and “All I Want for Christmas, is Wu!!!!!!”

It’s Christmas Eve and all the little panda kindergarteners are snug in their beds, hoping that Pandy Claws will come down the chimney with lots of gifts, conveniently overlooking how very NOT good they have been this past year.  Do we need to count the ways?  I think not…we are hoping that Pandy Claws will overlook one …or …um…3,679 slightly naughty things they have done this year.

Those of us who are devoted to pandas have already gotten one very big gift this year, and that is of course our “little gift”  Xiao Liwu, affectionately called “little Mr. Wu” by those of us who love him and would like to get our hands on his furry little patootie…oops.  Excuse me…I get carried away when thinking of his cute Wu self.  So today’s cartoon is dedicated to Mr. Wu.

Leaping out of his holiday wrapping, we want to take this little gift home with us!

Leaping out of his holiday wrapping, we want to take this little gift home with us!

I’m taking tomorrow off from posting, but I’ll be back with more pandas on Wednesday!  You may have noticed that Mehitabel has been taking some time off from the pandas, but rest assured she is well and will be back in January to whip those panda kindergarteners into shape!

We do not forget the sadness we all felt earlier this fall when the new cub of our beloved Mei Xiang, did not survive this fall.  No one said being an endangered species was going to be easy.  We love our smallest bear in San Diego no less, and perhaps a bit more, than we might have otherwise.  To those of us who are having a less than jolly holiday, we hope we  pandas have lightened the darkness just a little at least. There is much in the world both at large and personally that makes us wonder if there will be light after all the darkness. Keep the faith, and be the bears.  I couldn’t do it without you.

Be the Bear,

Day One of 31 days of Pandas! Huzzah!!!!!!

Well despite the fact that I was at my first book launch party ever, put on by those fine folks at The Rob Schouten Gallery, I came home and got to work finishing my first cartoon of 31 days of Pandas!   It is a “kinder and gentler” cartoon than usually appears on these pages, but I have been spending…um..a bit of time (do NOT ask how much time, because I’d probably lie about it) watching the newest San Diego Zoo Panda cub, who has just turned 4 months old this week.

This little guy has his picture in the dictionary, as an illustration of the word cute, so how could I not give him his own feature cartoon?  So, without further ado, here’s Little Mr. Wu!

"Howdy do! I'm Mr. Wu! Who are you?"

“Howdy do! I’m Mr. Wu! Who are you?”

Be the (incredibly cute) Bear!

PS: if anyone asks, I did NOT eat ALL the cuppycakes at the book launch party, OK?

In honor of our favorite chubby cubbie…..

Bai Yun’s newest offspring, affectionately known as #6, is started to crawl about in anticipation of becoming the latest media celebrity west of the Rockies.

#6 is getting ready to make his move!

Huzzah!….ooops.

It’s Monday!  Time to Be the Bear!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled hilarity for this message

If you are not aware already, the nation’s (well this nation anyway) newest panda ceased to be after only 6 days on the planet.  We send inner pandy thoughts to Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and all the staff at the National Zoo in Washington DC. They should know that the nation’s panda faithful mourn with them.

We know that these things happen…nature knows what it is doing, but it doesn’t make us any less sad.  We will go back to being funny tomorrow.

Till then,

Be the bear.

Huzzah, Huzzah, A bear is born!

We are quite excited to learn that a new panda cub was born to Madame Bai Yun, the queen of panda moms, at the San Diego Zoo yesterday afternoon.  (no midnight vigils for Bai! )

Now if only Mei Xiang and Ya Ya could share in the blessed events….

we are still hoping for a panda cub trifecta

Later this week…the exciting conclusion to the torch bear’s saga!

If it isn’t one thing, it’s your mother….

Editor’s Note:   But enough about that!  I’ve been working on some drawings for a (panda) book project, so I haven’t been keeping up with Bob and the Panda Kindergarten.  Fortunately, I just got these pictures from Panda-Palooza 2012 which took place at the San Diego Zoo last weekend.  Panda-Palooza is, of course, the celebration of all things panda, and several of our Facebook fans worked long and hard to make this event happen.  Since I myself could not attend, I sent Bob and Babette (and the panda kindergarten to go in my place.  Here are some pictures of them at the convention.

Here is Babette being a very helpful panda. "Would you like to use my pen?"

"This way! This way to the Pandas!"

"Hellooooo! here I am! Fellow panda...Hellooooo!"

"OOOO...I hope I don't get car sick back here...Are we there yet?"

Are we having fun yet?

New cartoons soon… I promise!

San Diego Panda Whoopie!

News on the street is that perhaps the “festivities” (we are a family friendly cartoon feature…um… mostly) that took place at the San Diego Zoo earlier this week may have some adorable dividends.  Bai Yun is not telling, although Gao Gao has a bit of a smirk, and keepers reported hearing him mumbling, “Whose da bear?  I’m bad, I’m bad, I still got it…” under his breath as he did handstands and relaxed in his hot-tub.  We won’t know for sure until much later this year, as pandas are notoriously tight-lipped on this subject, as well as unpredictable.

While we wait for our resident chronicler of pandas (will you get on it, and get off the darn computer and DRAW for cryin’ out loud?) to finish the latest cartoon, here is an old favorite on the subject of panda parenthood.

will the pitter patter of little paws soon follow?

Till we know more,

More from the Panda Kindergarten! Huzzah!

In honor of the announcement of impending pandamonium in Canada (our neighbor to the North), I thought I would pay a little homage to one of my favorite Canadian musicians.

Meet the Pandals!

And Babette is no sooner back from her trip to China (from which I have just seen some pictures) than she must get ready to go to PandaPalooza! at the San Diego Zoo this weekend.  It is so hard being an international spokespanda!

Coming soon, more panda product endorsements, tails from Scotland, and product warning labels: There is no holding back!

A Bear By Any Other Name Would Smell…well, that’s it.

It is spring time and pandas are in the mood for loooooove.  From San Diego Z00 (where they let the panda cam show some RATHER personal stuff, if you ask me, to Edinburgh, Scotland, where the happy (panda) couple have been hired to promote….deodorant.  No, I am not making this up.   The Royal Zoo in Edinburgh Scotland has played let’s make a deal with manufacturers of deodorant, to have the Scottish Pandas appear in their advertising.  I can’t make stuff up this good, no way.  Since I am not able to receive TV commercials from Scotland, it was, however, left to my imagination to bring you the commercial.  (OK, I DID make this up.)

A bear by any other name, would still smell pretty funky.

Stay tuned this week for more panda product placement!

2012 Preview continues!

Oh, the pandas are busy this spring!  Here are some more of the exciting stories we will be covering soon!  I would also like to jump about and clap my paws with glee ( which produces a kind of muffled, fuzzy sound) because there have been over 21,000 views of the Panda Chronicles!  Huzzah!

The panda kindergarten: bringing chaos the world over!

We can’t tell you how sorry we are not to be at Pandapalooza at the San Diego Zoo this year,  but we will be there in spirit, and start making plans for next year.  (maybe with a book???)  We did send along a few goodies for prizes at the conference.  I hope YOU are a lucky winner!
