I’m late, I’m late…..

Oh my ears and whiskers! I had been doing so well, getting all my cartoons done and posted in advance, but this bear is wearing the “semi-famous artist putting on an show with 11 artists” hat this week, and expecting 400-600 people to show up at our show, so, if I am a little behind, I have a good excuse! If A Cuppycake Falls in the Forest…

…and there is no one there to hear it, who gets to eat the cuppycake?

Well, this may be a first for the Panda Chronicles, a cartoon with no pandas! However, this panda-less tale comes to us from none other than panda chronicler par excellence`, Henry Nicholls, Author of The Way of the Panda. Henry was kind enough to alert me to the story of a bear in Alaska, who followed his nose to a cuppycake birthday party.

I am not making (some of) this up.

Cuppycakes are to bears as toast is to otters.

And although there are no pandas in this particular episode, Mr B. Bear has agreed to appear on the Mehitabel Tonite! Show next week, to talk about his traumatic ordeal. Won’t that be fun?

And while you are thinking about cuppycakes, I think you should hop (or galumph, depending on how many cuppycakes you have eaten today) on over to V Something Speaks and read the first recipe of The Panda Chronicles Cuppycake Cookbook! It celebrates Princess Pinky, who as everyone knows, is having her first birthday next month.

And, um…Mr Wu has his birthday next week. We haven’t forgotten you, Mr Wu. You will always be number one with me!

You might want to watch the San Diego Zoo pandacam on Tuesday morning, for Mr Wu’s birthday party. Last year his girlfriends at the zoo made him an absolutely spectacular cake for his first birthday, and I’m sure they will attempt to out-do themselves this year.

A Friday so Fabulous and Furry…

…that we can hardly contain our excitement! We are in the run-up to one of the most exciting days of the year!

Yes, I am referring to Mr Wu’s SECOND BIRTHDAY!!!!!! Will he take a bath to celebrate the occasion? Don’t count on it. But it’s not a problem, since we are on the interweb, and Mr Wu is happily, if fragrantly, in Pandiego!

Here are a few of my favorite cartoons about Mr Wu. If you want more Wu, more of the time, I suggest you acquire a copy of the fourth Panda Chronicles collection: The Panda Chronicles Book 4: The Book of Wu!

Hope you are getting lots of cuppycakes ready to celebrate with Mr Wu on his actual birthday on Tuesday July 29th! And BTW this week is National Zookeepers week, so let’s put our paws together for all of Mr Wu’s girlfriends, and the nannykeepers that keep Pinky and the Meihems in line. A special mention should go out to the panda house folks at Zoo Atlanta, for their totally awesome animal care that they accomplished when Lun Lun surprised them (and apparently herself) with twins!

And a further bit of news from the Panda Publishing front, get a first look (not to mention first taste,) of what we have up our sleeves…er…paws with The Panda Chronicles Cuppycake Cookbook, coming to you…um…eventually from the paws of panda aficionado and chef du cuppycake, Vicky Vladic over at her blog, V Something Speaks. She shares the first recipe from the book, celebrating our very own birthday girl-to-be, Princess Pinky.

If you want to know when this book will be a reality, subscribe to this blog (and/or V Something Speaks too!) and you will know before anyone else! Episode 7: A Suspicious Document

The plot is thickening, no question about it. Babette du Panda has presented the alleged will of Minette, in an attempt to convince Inspector Panda that she is the rightful owner of the prized painting.

But first, here is the previous episode for those who have just tuned in!

Fabulous Furry Friday Salutes…

…the panda kindergarten!

What could be better for this Friday the 13th than a look at the panda kindergarten, those rascally, recalcitrant, ruffians? They are the inspiration (well one of the inspirations, anyway,) for my newest book, Pandamorphosis!

The first appearance of the panda kindergarten, in much (MUCH) more innocent times…

And BTW, we’ve been making some guest appearances around the interwebs: hear just where all these pandas came from on Cordelia’s Mom, Still, and how Pandamorphosis finally got published on Cordelia Calls it Quits. There will be some more guest appearances over the next couple weeks, which I will be sure to alert you to!

Meanwhile, back to the pandy kindy:

And of course, who could forget the panda kindergarten in their first appearance in the Panda Olympic Games?

Huzzah!

Going for the …um…chocolate chip.

But the panda kindergarten may be best known for leading some of the newer and younger pandas astray…Sigh….I’m sure they are trying to be good…

Inspector Panda in His Feature Debut

I know, I know, I’ve been promising this for a long time, but what with one panda then another, and Princess Pinky being so. very. insistent. that it is all about her, what’s a panda satirist to do? And I might add, I do have a few other things on my plate besides writing and drawing panda cartoons all day. (subliminal message…buy….more….books….)

Anyway, at long last, I am starting Inspector Panda’s epic (I hope) saga, starring Robert Thelonious Panda as Inspector Panda, Mr. Wu as his erstwhile assistant, and Babette de Panda as the troubled and troubling femme fatale!

(Special note to Princess Pinky: while this story is NOT about the Highway closing hacker incident, that case is still open, and Inspector Panda never closes a case unsolved. Just sayin, ‘kay?)

If “trouble” ever had a proper name, that name is Babette de Panda…

As a rather geeky illustrator/cartoonist side note, I decided to make a switch from using technical pens for my drawings, to old fashioned dip pens. I’m thinking that I can get a much more expressive and varied line with them. Just part of my evolution as a comics artist. (plus then I get to buy some new stuff in the art catalogues. Huzzah!)

Yoohoo! here I am, having successfully made it to the penultimate day of the A to Z Bloggers Challenge, where I have worked my way through the alphabet, demonstrating the relevance of all letters to pandas. Yes, you’ve had to yawn through my yackkety-yakking, yadda, yadda, yaddaing about pandas, but so what? It could be worse, couldn’t it?

Couldn’t it??????

Besides, what could be cuter than pandas wearing yarmulkes?

I skipped the year of the snake, because…hello? snakes? and moved right on to the Year of the Horsie!

And lest we forget, The Panda Chronicles operates under the banner of Your Brain on Pandas! OK, well maybe it’s my brain that’s on pandas.

I want to send a special shout out to a couple of the blogs that I really enjoyed and either was already following or am now following: The Art of Not Getting Published, The Ninja Librarian, and The Pedestrian Writer. There are many more good blogs that participated, and I look forward to working my way through the list as what with writing a post everyday, I had less time to read other blogs than I had hoped I would.

Meanwhile, progress is progressing on Pandamorphosis, my wordless picture book. Stay tuned to this very blog for very excited announcements when it is ready to hit the street. Meanwhile, my interview about Kickstarter on Whidbey Air Radio’s show Isle of the Arts, has been rescheduled for next Monday. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you.

X marks the spot

What X-citement we have had the month! Despite the X-erable weather and heck…I can’t hardly find any words that start with X without cheating. X-scuses, X-scuses…

Meanwhile, we are recovering from our X-hausting bout with yet another version of this winter’s cold and flu season. On Wednesday we will be back with a new cartoon (a REALLY new cartoon!) and hopefully, we will resume our normal schedule of a new cartoon every Sunday and Wednesday, as well as an “encore presentation” for Fabulous Furry Fridays.

Thank you to all the A to Z-ers who came to visit this month. I hope you will stick around and say hi from time to time. There are some new blogs that I am now following, as well as a couple that I already followed. Posting daily did not give me as much time as I had hoped for visiting other blogs, but with the list still accessible (yes?) I hope to rectify that situation.

Woe is me

They say you should never explain, and never apologize on blogs, just go about your business, but with only 4 letters left to go in the alphabet, I must (I must) throw myself on the mercy of my panda fans, and tell you that I came down with the “spring crud cold” and have not been able to hold my head up to make a new cartoon. Plus I have had to cancel my appearance on a local radio show, where I was going to talk about Kickstarter.

Alas.

But at least, I can pull something from the archives to tide you over till I feel less worse. (Today is brought to you by the letter “W” for Whoops.)

A Salute to Pandas (What, you thought I was going to say “Penguins”?)

Salutations! Wow, here we are, all the way to “S” on the fun and fabulous A to Z Blog Challenge. I don’t know what number “S” corresponds to, because I can only count up to four, having only four paws.

So, silly of me to suppose that a Salute to Pandas (please sound trumpet or saxophone every time I say, “Salute to Pandas” preferably with some sound effects) could be sabotaged when everyone knows that pandas are sacrosanct. I mean, it would be sacrilegious to sacrifice the Salute to Pandas by subsuming it to some less salubrious day. We sacrifice the simplistic and saccharine in subservience to the satirical and the sarcastic. We see no schadenfreude nor schmaltz as we scamper and schmooze through our schedule.

Here’s a sample:

I keep hearing the song “bears on the Run” going through my head…the ski run, that is!

And a day without the Dance of the Sugar Plum Pandas is just not worth starting.
